DUNHAM LENA_S10

Lena Dunham is featured in:

Season 10, Episode 9: In the Blood

Lena Dunham is the ultimate multi-hyphenate – a tremendously skilled and award-winning actor, writer, director, producer and philanthropist.

In all her projects, Lena’s technique and boldness as a writer, director, and actor allow her to convey a wide range of human experience. From humor and sexuality to pain and vulnerability, her work resonates across genres with her distinct and recognizable style.

In 2019, Dunham announced her production company, GOOD THING GOING (GTG). GTG has a full slate of projects across film, television, theater and podcasting with an exclusive first look deal with HBO. In addition to Dunham’s own work, Dunham's GOOD THING GOING is devoted to developing artist-led film and television, work fueled by singular visions and impossible to deny unique perspectives.

Dunham is set to star in and produce, under her GOOD THING GOING banner, IRON BOX, a multi-generational comedy about a New York businesswoman who journeys with her father to Poland in an effort to explore their roots. The film is being directed by Julia Von Heinz and is being packaged for the European Film Market (EFM) in Berlin.

Dunham’s most recent project is the film adaptation of Catherine Called Birdy, from the Newberry Honor novel by Karen Cushman, which she directed and wrote. The book follows ‘Catherine,’ a spirited and inquisitive 14-year-old girl who bucks against convention in 1290 England. The film is produced by Working Title in association with GOOD THING GOING. Catherine Called Birdy premiered at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival and is currently streaming on Prime Video.

In 2022, Dunham released her first feature film as a writer-director in over a decade, Sharp Stick. The production, which boasted almost exclusively female department heads, was made through GTG and premiered at Sundance Film Festival in January 2022.

Other recent projects include executive producing Generation, created by 17-year-old Zelda Barnz, for HBO Max. This half-hour Dramedy follows a group of high school students whose exploration of modern sexuality tests deeply entrenched beliefs about life, love and the nature of family in their conservative community. Dunham also directed the first episode of HBO's new series Industry, produced by Bad Wolf and GOOD THING GOING. The show is set in the cutthroat world of international finance as seen through the eyes of ambitious twenty-somethings struggling to secure their futures.

Dunham starred in and served as executive producer, writer, and director for HBO’s hit series GIRLS, which wrapped after six critically acclaimed seasons. She has been nominated for eight Emmy Awards and has won two Golden Globes. Her role as ‘Hannah Horvath’ on GIRLS, the maddening yet relatable millennial, won her the award for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy at the 2013 Golden Globe Awards. In film, she most recently appeared in Quentin Tarantino’s ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD the Manson family’s mother hen, ‘Gypsy’.

An accomplished author, Lena is also a frequent contributor to THE NEW YORKER, VOGUE and THE NEW YORK TIMES. She currently hosts the GTG’s podcast The C Word alongside writer/historian Alissa Bennett which offers a weekly historical deep-dive into the life and media coverage of a woman deemed “crazy” by society, unpacking the lives of these women with empathy and humor. The podcast takes a hilarious and often heartbreaking look into exactly what it means when we call women ‘crazy’ and is available exclusively on Luminary.

Lena’s book of personal essays, Not That Kind of Girl, was published by Random House in September 2014 and was a #1 NY Times best seller. Random House will publish her two forthcoming books, a memoir and a volume of short stories.

In 2013, Dunham made history as the first woman to win a DGA award in the Best TV Comedy Director category. In 2010, she won an Independent Spirit Award for Best First Screenplay for her feature “Tiny Furniture,” which she also starred in and directed. Tiny Furniture is available alongside her first film Creative Nonfiction on DVD from The Criterion Collection.

As a philanthropist, Lena and GTG focus on helping to heal women whose lives have been scarred by trauma and addiction through her work with Friendly House, a woman’s rehabilitation and sober living facility in Los Angeles and the David Lynch Foundation.
