HOMEOWNERS have been urged to read up on "bin etiquette" to avoid being slapped with an £80 fine.

The regulations surrounding wheelie bins come under section 46A of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, and fines can be issued if the bin causes an issue - especially with neighbours.

Rule breaks include leaving your wheelie bin out for days, putting your rubbish in the wrong bin or obstructing neighbours' property with your bin.

“It’s surprising what you can get fined for now, but using some common sense will mean you avoid any issues," the experts at Garden Buildings Direct said.

“Some simple bin etiquette will help."

As well as putting your bin out on bin day, make sure you collect the bin and return it to its rightful place once it's empty and you're home.

"If you’re going to be away, ask a neighbour or family member to do your bins for you," the pros explained.

"There’s nothing worse than smelly rubbish sitting in the bin for weeks."

Leaving rubbish in your bins for days on end can also attract vermin like rats and foxes.

And "be careful when leaving" your bins out for rubbish collection.

It's important to avoid blocking driveways, "bus stops, cycle paths and footpaths", the experts explained.

While you should look after your wheelie bins and food caddies, it's worth contacting your local council if they do get damaged.

"Many will replace or fix them free of charge," they said.

Their final tip is to always make sure you've got the right rubbish in the right bin.

"Bin colours aren’t uniform across the country so if you’re in a different area, it is important to check," they concluded.

"Check too what can go in recycling and garden rubbish.

"You may be surprised at what is and isn’t allowed."

While fines for breaking the bin rules can be as high as £80, homeowners do have a right to explain why they shouldn't have to pay.
