Ever wanted to do a 'maps to the stars' tour of Hollywood's most famous houses? From Marilyn Monroe and James Dean to Audrey Hepburn and Marlon Brando, we've brought together some of the world's most amazing celebrity pads, all steeped in cinematic history.

All dollar values in US dollars.

Judy Garland's Hollywood Hills mansion

MGM

MGM

Musical legend Judy Garland's spectacular former home is perched high in the Hollywood Hills. The Wizard of Oz star lived in the glamorous home, which is just above the famed Sunset Strip, in the mid-1940s with her husband, director Vincente Minnelli, and daughter Liza.

The magnificent home on Evanview Drive sold in 2020 for $4.7 million (£3.7m). It's spread over three floors, making it the ideal home for an A-lister.

This pedigree mansion was designed by star architect John Elgin Woolf whose other clients included Cary Grant and Bob Hope and was also owned by a member of the Rat Pack: Sammy Davis Jr.

The home was built in 1941, just before Garland and her family moved in, but as you would expect from such a desirable house it has undergone extensive modern renovations.

The main living space boasts dark hardwood floors, high ceilings and French doors that lead out to the private balcony.

The pool house, which was said to have been built by Sammy Davis Jr, boasts an oversized fireplace, a marble bar, his-and-hers-baths and a full guest suite.

With soaring beamed ceilings and a sleek monochrome colour scheme, it would have been the perfect spot for the singer to party with his famous friends Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and the rest.

Judy's career and private life were notoriously unstable in the mid-1940s, and we can assume that this would have been a sanctuary for the star. Spread over 5,000 square feet, the property has every amenity a star would ever need including five bedrooms and seven-and-a-half bathrooms.

Kitted out for when a star needs to make a quick getaway, there is a screening room with a hidden bookshelf door that leads through to the original Garland suite.

In addition to the Art Deco-style main home and the pool house, there's also a swimming pool framed by an outdoor fireplace and stylish grey decking.

The grounds are also home to an orchard and extensive gardens. Who wouldn't want to while away the hours in this incredible Hollywood retreat?

The ultimate American crooner, Frank Sinatra is synonymous with Hollywood's heyday. One of the world's best-selling musicians, Ol' Blue Eyes has sold over 150 million records worldwide and won Academy Awards to boot.

Built in 1949, his former home is a beautiful example of Modernist architecture and once lay at the heart of Hollywood's glittering social scene. Join us as we take a tour...

With vast swathes of glass and sleek lines, this marvel is known as Byrdview, one of Hollywood's most famous celebrity estates.

Located on Farralone Avenue, it's nestled amongst the star-studded LA enclaves of Hidden Hills, Sierra Canyon and Viewpoint.

Some of the most famous people of the 20th and 21st centuries have called Byrdview home. Sinatra lived here in the 1950s and 60s, inviting the Rat Pack and the rest of his exclusive cohort to join him for swinging house parties.

Yet, this unique property is far more than just a celebrity hotspot. Byrdview is a rare relic, a piece of architectural and art history. It was designed by the legendary William Pereira and remains one of only four homes he built.

Throughout the seven-bedroom house, you'll find vast expanses of floor-to-ceiling windows that embrace the great outdoors, folding outwards and filling the home with natural light and fresh air.

Naturally, the time capsule celebrity home offers ample room for entertaining. In fact, this kitchen is one of two in the house and comes equipped with a bar, ready to greet guests with refreshments upon arrival.

If you were wondering just how much room the celebrity tenants had to entertain in, the property spans a whopping 8,161 square feet, including space for 100 cars out front – more than enough space for one hell of a party!

It’s not a Hollywood home if there’s not an incredible view over the Californian valleys. As a plus, the agricultural zoning of this estate allows for the next tenants to cultivate their own vineyard should they wish.

As one of LA’s most glamorous retreats, it welcomed the vow renewal of Judy Garland and Vincente Minnelli, and Marilyn Monroe is rumoured to have stayed in the guest house. In more recent years, it's been the filming location for smash hits like DreamgirlsTransformers and Mad Men. International superstars Rihanna, Usher and Mariah Carey have also filmed music videos at Byrdview.

With views like these, it's no wonder it's somewhat of a celebrity hotspot. At the end of 2018, the home was listed for $12.5 million (£9.8m) but was mysteriously removed from the market in 2019.

Howard Hughes' Spanish Revival mansion

Howard Hughes was one of the most eccentric, talked-about characters of Golden Age America. An entrepreneur, aviation pioneer and film producer, he dated film stars, made movies and – fittingly for one of the richest men in the country – lived in some truly incredible properties.

The home he lived in during the peak of his creative career hit the market in July 2023 for an impressive $23 million (£18m). Let's take a look around...

Howard Hughes' Spanish Revival mansion

Smith & Berg

Smith & Berg

Standing right on the 8th green of Wilshire Country Club, where Hughes himself used to golf, the Hancock Park home was first designed for a socialite by master architect Roland E. Coate in 1926.

Today, the 10,179-square-foot half-moon-shaped estate exudes "timeless charm", according to the listing, retaining wood-beamed ceilings and red clay floor tiles, but it has been given a modern update and now has contemporary style interiors.

Smith & Berg

Perhaps a nod to the Golden Age of Hollywood or even Hughes' Midas touch when it came to business, the kitchen gleams gold, thanks to polished brass countertops and matching wall tiles.

The kitchen flows into a large family room with floor-to-ceiling fitting bookshelves, which in turn flows outside into one of the home's many secluded outdoor areas.

Smith & Berg

The house even appeared in the Howard Hughes biopic The Aviator. The exterior of the Spanish Revival mansion featured in the film, while the interiors were recreated in the studio. Leonard DiCaprio famously depicted Hughes in the 2004 film, alongside Cate Blanchett, who played Katherine Hepburn.

Directed by Martin Scorcese, the film was hailed as "a gorgeous tribute to the Golden Age of Hollywood" and garnered 11 Oscar nominations, winning five.

Smith & Berg

As well as eight bedrooms and 12 bathrooms, the home also features – appropriately enough – a screening room and an attached guest residence. Set around a cobbled courtyard, it's hidden away behind a tall hedge and solid electric gates, which combine to exude an air of privacy.

Suffering life-long Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and severe pain caused by several plane crashes, the troubled Hughes – who became reclusive later in life – is said to have found sanctuary at the home.

Smith & Berg

Although he could have afforded almost any home he wanted, Hughes spent his later life living in one hotel after another, notably buying many hotels and casinos in Las Vegas.

Ironically, despite surviving multiple plane crashes, the larger-than-life character died from kidney failure while onboard a Lear jet in 1976. His legacy lives on through his contribution to aviation, the films he shot and in this home. With such a rich history, it's not surprising it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Although English by birth, Sir Alfred Hitchcock is one of the best-known Hollywood directors of all time.

With multiple iconic films to his name, such as Psycho, To Catch a Thief and Vertigo, the influential figure was nominated for five Best Director Oscars, although shockingly he never won. Luckily his films fared somewhat better, garnering 46 Academy Award nominations and winning six.

Hitchcock left England for Hollywood in 1939. Although the director initially lived in an apartment on Wiltshire Boulevard, he ended his days in this charming Bel Air bungalow, where he lived until his death in 1980, aged 80.

Bordering the 15th fairway of the Bel-Air Country Club golf course, this pretty house is not the home you might expect for the creator of numerous terrifying thrillers.

Compass

According to the listing, the four-bedroom, five-bathroom home was originally created by renowned designer-builder Carlton Burgess in 1942 and was snapped up by Hitchcock shortly after it was finished.

After his death, it was sold and given an extensive makeover in 1983, including this large living room with its impressive, vaulted ceiling.

Although the décor is what The Robb Report tactfully describes as "out of step with current decorative trends", it's no doubt unique.

The characterful home certainly caught several eyes when it hit the market in June 2023 at just shy of $8.3 million (£6.5m) and it was subject to multiple offers, with the eventual buyer stumping up a shade over $8.8 million (£6.9m) for the historic home.

The new owners – said to be the founder of TV production company Eyeworks and his wife – will no doubt give the bijou home an extensive remodel.

They previously owned a 33,000-square-foot mansion nearby, which they sold in 2021 for $70 million (£54.9m) to The Weeknd, who shot his 'disastrous' HBO show The Idol there.

Standing on almost two-thirds of an acre, the home is tucked away behind a dense wall of shrubs and trees. This gorgeous loggia perfectly combines with the outdoor space to further elevate the feeling of secluded sanctuary.

We can just imagine the marvellous Mr Hitchcock reclining here, notepad in hand, dreaming up his next chilling tale.

The poster girl of 1950s and 60s Hollywood, Marilyn Monroe is arguably the most famous actress of cinema's Golden Age, with a legacy that has long outlived her 36 years.

Best known for Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and Some Like It Hot, the multi-talented performer was a child of the Great Depression and grew up in poverty. Her incredible homes were a far cry from the foster homes she bounced between growing up.

A Hollywood home is incomplete without a sun-soaked terrace for hosting your celebrity circle. This one is found behind huge double doors and looks out over a dazzling canyon.

Tucked away at the bottom of the garden and shrouded with trees, a grotto-like pool completes the exotic majesty of this enchanting home. As magical now as it was when the world's most famous blonde lived here, we think this is one house that will always have star quality.

James Dean's legendary acting career lasted just five years before he tragically died in a car crash in 1955 at the age of 24.

Known for his roles in Rebel Without a Cause and East of Eden, Dean got his lucky break due to his early career as a property handyman.

Perched on the east side of the Hollywood Hills, this beautiful Spanish-style villa on Quebec Drive was where the tragic cultural icon was first discovered and where he began his all-too-short career.

According to Hollywood history, the aspiring actor lived in the downstairs suite of the home where he worked as the caretaker for Hal B Wallis, head of Warner Brothers studios.

At one of Wallis’ many exclusive get-togethers, frequented by acting royalty, Dean was quickly discovered by an executive who cast him in the seminal role of troublemaker Jim Stark in Rebel Without A Cause.

The property sits on an 11,600 square feet lot, with the guest suite where Dean lived as he launched his career located below the main house.

To this day, the wing is kept as private quarters for visitors, though it lacks none of the luxuries of the main house.

The guest suite can be accessed via a staircase which opens out into lavish living quarters, or through a private entrance in the garden which leads into Dean’s old bedroom.

The iconic actor’s former bedroom may be modest in size compared to most A-list pads, but we think this is a pretty swell space for the young star to call home before he made his millions.

Dean's dwelling also had its own spacious living area, complete with a roaring fireplace – not too shabby for a live-in handyman. Unsurprisingly, the home last sold in 2018 for $3.8 million (£3m).

American pianist, singer and actor Liberace was known and loved for his flamboyant costumes and trademark candelabras, which he would place on top of his piano before a performance.

The one-of-a-kind showman even had a movie made about his life, Behind the Candelabra, which starred Michael Douglas, Matt Damon and Rob Lowe, proving that his musical legacy is still enduring.

Let's take a look at the musician's secret West Hollywood townhouse...

Amazingly, the property was built by MGM Studios in 1937 and is part of The Shoreham, a private cluster of 15 apartments and townhouses that were designed to house the film company's prized stars.

The Regency-inspired estate is set behind iron gates and is surrounded by tranquil gardens and koi ponds, just above Sunset Boulevard.

Reportedly, everyone from Janet Leigh to Veronica Lake and Katherine Hepburn lived on the West Hollywood estate.

This pad, considered one of the largest townhouses on the street, became the secret hideout of Liberace in the 1970s. Before the pianist moved in, the place belonged to Barbara Marx, the fourth wife of Frank Sinatra.

Silver screen star Yvette Mimieux and her husband Howard Ruby owned "one of Bel Air’s prettiest homes" for more than 40 years.

Half-French, half-Mexican, Mimieux was born in LA and hit the TV screen at the age of 17 before going on to write and star in multiple films, even earning three Golden Globe nominations. Her marriage to Ruby, a property magnate, was her third, having first married at 17 and hiding the union for two years.

Even though his last movie hit our screens in 1991, James Stewart, or Jimmy as he is also known, remains one of history's most iconic actors.
