This pedigree mansion was designed by star architect John Elgin Woolf – whose other clients included Cary Grant and Bob Hope – and was also owned by a member of the Rat Pack: Sammy Davis Jr.

Howard Hughes was one of the most eccentric, talked-about characters of Golden Age America. An entrepreneur, aviation pioneer and film producer, he dated film stars, made movies and – fittingly for one of the richest men in the country – lived in some truly incredible properties.

Standing right on the 8th green of Wilshire Country Club, where Hughes himself used to golf, the Hancock Park home was first designed for a socialite by master architect Roland E. Coate in 1926.

Today, the 10,179-square-foot half-moon-shaped estate exudes "timeless charm", according to the listing, retaining wood-beamed ceilings and red clay floor tiles, but it has been given a modern update and now has contemporary style interiors.

Perhaps a nod to the Golden Age of Hollywood or even Hughes' Midas touch when it came to business, the kitchen gleams gold, thanks to polished brass countertops and matching wall tiles.

The kitchen flows into a large family room with floor-to-ceiling fitting bookshelves, which in turn flows outside into one of the home's many secluded outdoor areas.

The house even appeared in the Howard Hughes biopic The Aviator. The exterior of the Spanish Revival mansion featured in the film, while the interiors were recreated in the studio. Leonard DiCaprio famously depicted Hughes in the 2004 film, alongside Cate Blanchett, who played Katherine Hepburn.

Directed by Martin Scorcese, the film was hailed as "a gorgeous tribute to the Golden Age of Hollywood" and garnered 11 Oscar nominations, winning five.

As well as eight bedrooms and 12 bathrooms, the home also features – appropriately enough – a screening room and an attached guest residence. Set around a cobbled courtyard, it's hidden away behind a tall hedge and solid electric gates, which combine to exude an air of privacy.

Suffering life-long Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and severe pain caused by several plane crashes, the troubled Hughes – who became reclusive later in life – is said to have found sanctuary at the home.

Although he could have afforded almost any home he wanted, Hughes spent his later life living in one hotel after another, notably buying many hotels and casinos in Las Vegas.

Ironically, despite surviving multiple plane crashes, the larger-than-life character died from kidney failure while onboard a Lear jet in 1976. His legacy lives on through his contribution to aviation, the films he shot and in this home. With such a rich history, it's not surprising it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Although English by birth, Sir Alfred Hitchcock is one of the best-known Hollywood directors of all time.

With multiple iconic films to his name, such as Psycho, To Catch a Thief and Vertigo, the influential figure was nominated for five Best Director Oscars, although shockingly he never won. Luckily his films fared somewhat better, garnering 46 Academy Award nominations and winning six.

Hitchcock left England for Hollywood in 1939. Although the director initially lived in an apartment on Wiltshire Boulevard, he ended his days in this charming Bel Air bungalow, where he lived until his death in 1980, aged 80.

Bordering the 15th fairway of the Bel-Air Country Club golf course, this pretty house is not the home you might expect for the creator of numerous terrifying thrillers.

According to the listing, the four-bedroom, five-bathroom home was originally created by renowned designer-builder Carlton Burgess in 1942 and was snapped up by Hitchcock shortly after it was finished.

After his death, it was sold and given an extensive makeover in 1983, including this large living room with its impressive, vaulted ceiling.

Although the décor is what The Robb Report tactfully describes as "out of step with current decorative trends", it's no doubt unique.

The characterful home certainly caught several eyes when it hit the market in June 2023 at just shy of $8.3 million (£6.5m) and it was subject to multiple offers, with the eventual buyer stumping up a shade over $8.8 million (£6.9m) for the historic home.

The new owners – said to be the founder of TV production company Eyeworks and his wife – will no doubt give the bijou home an extensive remodel.

They previously owned a 33,000-square-foot mansion nearby, which they sold in 2021 for $70 million (£54.9m) to The Weeknd, who shot his 'disastrous' HBO show The Idol there.

In 2021, the Hollywood classic landed on the market in December 2023 for almost $9 million (£7.1m). The house was being sold by singer-songwriter Betty Moon but, after several price changes, the listing was removed shortly afterwards.

Silver screen star Yvette Mimieux and her husband Howard Ruby owned "one of Bel Air’s prettiest homes" for more than 40 years.

Half-French, half-Mexican, Mimieux was born in LA and hit the TV screen at the age of 17 before going on to write and star in multiple films, even earning three Golden Globe nominations. Her marriage to Ruby, a property magnate, was her third, having first married at 17 and hiding the union for two years.

The power couple bought the house in 1979 and have maintained its exquisite Mediterranean design, likening the property to a bejewelled Fabergé egg – and once you step inside you might just understand why.

Known as 'Il Sogno' (which translates to 'The Dream'), the property has been described as one of the great "true" Bel Air estates.

Ruby sold their longtime home in July 2022 for $35 million (£27.5m), which was $10 million (£7.9m) under their original asking price. He parted with the estate shortly after Mimieux's death in January 2022 at the age of 80.

The It's a Wonderful Life star enjoyed a film career that spanned almost 60 years, so he had plenty of cash for snapping up real estate across Los Angeles – and it was here that the enduring actor lived for five decades.
