TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Shawnee County is crafting plans to prepare for a potential new fire station in the Shawnee Heights area.

A plot of land, located on the 5400 block of Southeast 61st Street, near Ratner Road is being considered for the station.

The fire district has owned the lot for 20 years. As the area around it has developed, so has a greater need for better fire coverage.

The county commission today approved a change that will give the Shawnee Heights Fire Department better access to the property, to accommodate more modern fire trucks.

“We just need to get some wider frontage on this piece of property,” said Fire Chief Kevin Flory. “Trucks that were 20 years ago versus trucks of today have a different turn radius. So the frontage didn’t allow us to do the proper entryways to do a whole new fire station, so we need to widen it out.

The fire district hopes to move forward with actually building a station within the next 36 months.
