CHESTERFIELD, Mo. – After a long night of severe weather throughout the St. Louis metro area Monday, many are still rattled from the storms and damage left behind.

The National Weather Service assessed damage Tuesday and confirmed an EF-0 tornado touched down in Chesterfield.

Strong 85 mph winds brought down trees, sending one through the roof of a Chesterfield home. Although it was April Fool’s Day, the homeowner said this was no joke.

Nonie Gramlich has lived in her home for over 30 years and was left in shock when part of the roof was ripped off her home, leaving rain and hail pouring in.

“We didn’t realize anything happened to our house yet. Then the neighbor called and said that the roof is gone,” she said. “All night long, it was just crashing…making the best (of it) we can.”

Gramlich says she knew it was a tornado when she heard thunder.

“It could be a lot worse…we got good insurance, so we’re prepared,” she said.

“I heard like a freight train, and it got really loud and then it got quiet again,” Chesterfield resident Lauren Spielberg said.

When she went to check the back of her house on Canyon View Court, her siding was missing. The house also sustained roof and window damage.

“It could have been really bad, and thankfully my family was all safe in the basement,” she said.

Chesterfield resident Warren Rix was on his front porch on Hollow Tree Court when the storm approached his neighborhood. A pine tree in his front yard was uprooted.

“It just out of nowhere started hooking, started spinning and that’s when we kind of ended up with that tornado,” Rix said. “Another typical St. Louis storm…you got to be ready.”

Now that clean-up is underway, restoration companies have been busy Tuesday.

“We have been getting a whole lot of calls about storm damage, hail damage, wind damage, answering about 10,15 calls every hour,” David Kasabov with Right Choice Roofing & Restoration said. “We’re just driving around, touching base with all the homeowners.”

“We got a call late last night from USAA, one of their clients had some wind damage on the roof, they were taking on water,” Jimmie Dean from the Home Improvement Service Company said. “We got them all patched up (and) they’re all dried in.”

There were no injuries reported from the tornado.
