Bystanders took down a man who fired multiple rounds near a restaurant before being arrested by officers in Marysville on Tuesday night, according to police.
It happened while a family was celebrating at an engagement party at the Lake Indian Cuisine restaurant on the 900 block of B Street around 11:30 p.m. Police said several party-goers heard one gunshot and walked outside to check it out.
"He fired another four to five rounds out of the handgun while in the parking lot and fired them up in the air," said Chief Christian Sachs.
Sachs said the suspect, 26-year-old Roy Kirk Jr, then pointed the semi-automatic handgun directly at the men. But 32-year-old Amandeep Singh was also in the parking lot watching and worried about his relatives.
"We had almost 60-to-70 people inside so I'm just worried if he goes inside, might be a lot of kids over there," Singh told KCRA 3.
Singh said he had to do something and ran right towards the armed man.
"I hold both his hands from my hands then I just push him on the back and I just throw him inside of the restaurant," he said.
Singh's wife watched the takedown, while in the car, protecting their two-month-old daughter. Kanwaljeet Kaur called it a nightmare.
"I was very scared. I was using God's name and praying that everybody gets safe and nobody gets hurt," she said.
Police said that when officers arrived the alleged suspect, 26-year-old Roy Lavern Kirk Jr. was being held down by Singh's relatives, who jumped on him and took the gun away.
"It could have been a lot worse last night," said Sachs. "There could have been multiple victims, who knows how many more rounds he had. They didn't know that and they put themselves in harms way."
Sachs called Singh a hero and called to thank him.
Singh said he just wanted to save lives.
Marysville police said the Yuba City Police Department responded to the scene and informed officers that Kirk had been seen brandishing a gun in the parking lot of a gas station on Colusa Highway in Yuba City earlier.
Kirk, a Clear Lake Oaks resident, was arrested for attempted homicide and has been booked into Yuba County Jail, according to police.
He could be facing additional charges as an investigation is underway. Kirk is being held on $500,000 bond.
