73 New Updates

It took 82 games and five extra minutes to decide the second-best team in the Eastern Conference, and a playoff team with nothing to gain Sunday helped a first-place team out West emerge.

On an unprecedented final day of the regular season for the NBA, with more up for grabs in both conferences at game No. 82 than at any point in the league’s 77-year history, the New York Knicks defeated the Chicago Bulls in overtime 120-119 to claim second in the East.

And in the West, with the Oklahoma City Thunder beating the entirely depleted Dallas Mavericks 135-86, the Thunder emerged from a three-way tie with the Denver Nuggets and Minnesota Timberwolves to claim the No. 1 seed. With an average age of just under 24 years old, OKC is the youngest team to earn a No. 1 seed in league history.

Clippers coach Tyronn Lue says that Kawhi Leonard will not play today against the Houston Rockets, but has been doing some things in workouts

Lue would not commit to Leonard being ready for Game 1 of the Clippers' locked-in first-round series against the Dallas Mavericks, even though it appears Leonard is trending in the right direction.

No Steph or Draymond for Warriors

The Warriors are resting Steph Curry and Draymond Green in the regular season finale today vs Jazz. Jonathan Kuminga (right pelvic contusion) will test pregame and possibly play. Gary Payton II is out. Everyone else is expected to be available.

Curry's ankle is fine after the tweak the other night. The Warriors are resting him today, but Steve Kerr said he could've played, if needed.

Payton's calf tightness puts his status more in doubt: "We'll see over the next couple days on his availability for the Play-In," Kerr said.

Here are the Warriors' various postseason scenarios.

Despite being locked into the No. 9 seed and having nothing to play for this afternoon, the Bulls are not resting most of their regulars against the Knicks. DeMar DeRozan, Nikola Vucević, Alex Caruso and Coby White are all in action. Only Ayo Dosunmu (right quad) and Andre Drummond (sprained left ankle) are sitting. That will complicate the Knicks' hopes of rising to the No. 2 seed.

The game is close early in the second quarter. We'll see if the Bulls continue to use their regulars in the second half.

The Magic are playing to stay out of the Play-In Tournament today in Orlando and the Bucks have handled their intensity well thus far. They lead 30-22 after one quarter.

Damian Lillard has lived at the free throw line for the Bucks thus far. He's 7-of-9 from the line and up to nine points already, despite shooting just 1-for-7 from the field.

The Bucks clinch the No. 2 seed with a win today.

Geez ... with Donovan Mitchell, Darius Garland, and Caris LeVert all out Sunday, Craig Porter Jr. was the only active ballhandler on the roster. He just fell awkwardly with 2:30 in the first quarter against Charlotte and was helped off the floor, unable to put any weight on his left foot.

The Cavs' guards presently are Isaac Okoro and I guess Emoni Bates.

Strong and professional start from the Bucks today in Orlando. They're up 15-7 with 6:34 left in the first quarter.

Damian Lillard and Bobby Portis lead the Bucks with five points each.

Darius Garland, who was listed as doubtful for the Cavaliers with a back bruise, is indeed out of the lineup against the Hornets. That means Cleveland is sitting Garland, Donovan Mitchell and Caris LeVert despite having a chance to move up to the No. 2 or No. 3 seed in the East.

Nevertheless, the Cavaliers have jumped out to a double-digit lead midway through the first quarter.

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra on whether he would be scoreboard watching as well as coaching this afternoon.

"I don't even know where they put the scores in the arena."

Bucks guard Damian Lillard was a game-time decision ahead of Milwaukee's season finale against the Orlando Magic, but he is playing.

The Philadelphia 76ers are trying to live their best seed lives but their quest to avoid the Play-In Tournament is going to be a little more difficult today. Joel Embiid is not going to play Sunday in the season finale against the Brooklyn Nets because of his left knee.

The Sixers could beat the Nets without him but it's a hit for a team that could potentially still get the fifth seed today if all things break right. De'Anthony Melton and KJ Martin are out, too.

Brandon Ingram (left knee bone contusion) is listed as questionable for today's regular-season finale against the Lakers. He has not played since suffering the injury against the Orlando Magic on March 21.

Naji Marshall (left shoulder contusion) is also listed as questionable.

Larry Nance Jr., who missed the Pelicans' last two games for personal reasons, is not on the injury report.

Duncan Robinson (back) and Terry Rozier (neck), who have both missed the last three games, will be out for the Miami Heat's season closer against the Toronto. Robinson had been listed as questionable before coach Erik Spoelstra confirmed he was out.

Spoelstra added the time off has been good for both players, but would not confirm either will be available in the postseason. Barring some truly surprising results, the Heat will be in the Play-In Tournament, starting in the 7-8 game.

That game will be Wednesday if it is in Philadelphia and Tuesday if it is anywhere else.

The Golden State Warriors are listing Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, Klay Thompson, Chris Paul and Jonathan Kuminga as questionable against the Utah Jazz tomorrow. Gary Payton II is out. The Warriors are in 10th place. They have an outside shot at the ninth or eighth seed, but they need help.

The Bucks submitted an injury report for Sunday pivotal game vs. Orlando that will go a long way in determining the East's 2-4 and 5-8 seeds.

Out: Giannis Antetokounmpo, Jaylin Galloway, AJ Green

Probable: Damian Lillard (left adductor soreness), Thanasis Antetokounmpo (left hamstring soreness), MarJon Beauchamp (left ankle sprain).

Injury reports across the league

Taking a wider glance at injury reports across the league, there are several notable mentionings of stars potentially out of huge games. They are:

76ers-Nets — Joel Embiid (questionable after tweaking his surgically repaired left knee).

Bucks-Magic — Giannis Antetokounmpo (out, as expected, with left soleus strain); Damian Lillard (probable, left adductor soreness); Wendell Carter Jr. (questionable with back spasms).

Raptors-Heat — Toronto has several key players out with serious injury; Josh Richardson and Terry Rozier are out for the Heat.

Mavericks-Thunder — The Mavericks are resting virtually everyone, all or most rotation players, including Luka Dončić and Kyrie Irving. OKC's injury report is not posted.

Lakers-Pelicans — Brandon Ingram is questionable; Anthony Davis and LeBron James are almost always listed on the injury report. They are both probable.

Trail Blazers-Kings — The Blazers have most of their rotation players listed on the report in some manner, including Deandre Ayton and Scoot Henderson, who are questionable, and Jerami Grant who is out. The only surprise on the Kings' side is Trey Lyles (questionable, illness).

Jazz-Warriors — The Jazz are not playing their best players, outside of maybe Collin Sexton, who is questionable; Steph, Draymond, Klay, CP (all the household names) are all questionable, as is Jonathan Kuminga.

Suns-Timberwolves — Anthony Edwards and Karl-Anthony Towns are both questionable.

Change is coming for the lowly Pistons

Change is coming for the lowly Pistons

Brian Bradshaw Sevald / USA Today

Detroit, one of the NBA's most storied franchises, had everything go wrong in a season that needed to have everything go right in order to climb out of irrelevancy. The Pistons, for the second season in a row, will finish at the bottom of the NBA standings. At 14-67 with one game remaining, they compiled the worst regular-season record in franchise history and suffered a historic 28-game losing streak. They did so after hiring a coach who would be the highest paid in NBA history. They did so after barely changing a roster that won just 17 games the season prior. They did so after returning their No. 1 pick from 2021, Cade Cunningham, who only played 12 games a season ago before undergoing season-ending shin surgery, and having him answer nearly every question tossed his way.

The 2023-24 season was done before anyone stepped foot into 2024, resulting in a trade deadline that saw half of the roster get uprooted as Detroit had an NBA-record 31 players suit over the course of the year.

A season this ignominious forces blame to trickle from the top down. Owner Tom Gores made such a remarkable commitment to coach Monty Williams and extended GM Troy Weaver last summer and now has to navigate that with precision. Weaver, despite a frugal offseason and a romper-room roster, put a goal on his ballclub “to be in contention for 82 games.” Williams made decisions on the floor that left some in the organization confused.

Change might be coming, though. Team and league sources told The Athletic that Gores is considering hiring a president of basketball operations to have the final say on all basketball matters. The Pistons haven’t had someone in that exact role since 2018. As for Williams, it appears as of now that he will be back next season, assuming he demonstrates that he can deliver significantly more progress in the development of its team and players.

The ultimate goal for the Pistons, per team and league sources, is to have total synergy from the top down, making the situation fluid in the event Gores does decide to hire a new head decision-maker. Realistically, that person could request to hire his/her own people.

After this season, everything is on the table.

Interesting injury report in Cleveland this morning. The Cavaliers could win today and perhaps get to the second or third seed in the East (thus avoiding the Celtics' side of the bracket), but they will likely be without their top three guards in Donovan Mitchell, Darius Garland and Caris LeVert. Mitchell and LeVert have already been ruled out for the season finale at home against Charlotte, while Garland is listed as doubtful with a back bruise.

The Hornets, who are headed for the lottery, also have an extensive injury report, so it could all be moot. But the Cavs appear to be content with where they are currently: The four seed.

The stakes of each game

The NBA season concludes with games in two blocks this afternoon. Fourteen East teams will play at 1 p.m. ET, while the 15 West teams (plus Detroit) will tip off at 3:30 p.m. ET.
