LUMBERTON, N.C. (WBTW) — A good Samaritan who was hit and killed last month in Lumberton when he tried to intervene in a carjacking worked for the North Carolina Department of Transportation, officials confirmed to News13 Monday afternoon.

Jonathan Adam Lecompte, 38, of Fayetteville, North Carolina, was one of several people who tried to thwart the March 14 carjacking that led to the arrest of Ricky Alex Driggers, 28, on murder and other charges.

NCDOT referred questions about the investigation to law enforcement but issued the following statement about Lecompte’s death.

“NCDOT is heartbroken to share a Division 6 employee passed away in Robeson County on March 14, 2024. Our prayers and thoughts are with the family of Jonathan Lecompte. He was a dedicated, 16-year employee of the Department, working for the Sign Division of the Division 6 Traffic Services unit. Jonathan was greatly admired and will be sincerely missed.”

Over the weekend, a graphic video of the incident surfaced online. It appears to show Lecompte confronting the suspect and pointing a weapon at the driver’s side door of the vehicle before it backed away. A short time later, the vehicle reappeared and is shown hitting Lecompte and throwing his body into the air as it drives away.

Lumberton police said the incident began at about 10:30 a.m. in the 4100 block of W. 5th Street. Officers en route to a carjacking call were told the suspect had been involved in a hit-and-run in the parking lot of Go Gas at 2605 W. 5th Street and was trying to carjack a second vehicle on W. 5th Street in front of a McDonald’s restaurant.

“Good Samaritans got involved to prevent the carjacking but the suspect was then able to steal the vehicle of one of the good Samaritans,” police said in a news release. “In the process of stealing the vehicle the suspect reportedly intentionally struck one of the good Samaritans with the stolen vehicle.”

Driggers was being held without bond in the Robeson County Detention Center.
