In early March I published a Spring Collectibles guide. Little did I know the following week that my inbox would be filled with even more spring announcements that really couldn’t wait until summer to be celebrated.

So, here’s the absolutely necessary sequel to last month’s guide featuring some new ideas from the usual suspects. Maybe it will tide us over until Mother’s Day and summer. I have a feeling that the Star Wars ‘March to May the 4th’ might make that impossible. I don't mind. I hope you won't as well.

As always, gift responsibly.

Fueled by equal parts deception and demand, these films instead created one of the most wildly entertaining sub-genres in movie history. THE GAME OF CLONES: BRUCEPLOITATION COLLECTION, VOLUME 1 now presents 14 of the very best – and frequently very bizarre – films starring Bruce Li, Bruce Le, Dragon Lee, Bruce Liang and more, all restored for the first time ever from original film elements.

Band of Brothers by Stephen E. Ambrose
Introduced by Cole C. Kingseed
Foreword by Tom Hanks
Formed in the summer of 1942, the elite parachute regiment E ‘Easy’ Company was involved in some of the most critical missions of World War II, playing major roles at D-Day and Operation Market Garden, culminating in the capture of Hitler’s ‘Eagle’s Nest’. Their near-mythical heroics under the leadership of Major Dick Winters fascinated Stephen E. Ambrose, but it was the incredible camaraderie that the veterans still shared 50 years after the end of the war that inspired him to write Band of Brothers.

Left to fend for herself against her barbaric white captors, she must also stand up to her fellow slaves who would steal both her pathetic patch of ground and her virginity. An opportunity to escape sees her flee one set of horrors for another, choosing the slim chance of survival and freedom over a guaranteed life of hell.

The Dogs of Riga by Henning Mankell
Illustrated by Morgan Schweitzer
Translated by Laurie Thompson
Kurt Wallander’s latest mystery arrives on a winter tide: two dead men in a drifting lifeboat, each shot through the chest and then carefully dressed and arranged in their floating coffin. For Wallander it seems to signal a rise in a new wave of inexplicable violence that he feels ill-equipped to deal with, so when a detective from Latvia arrives to investigate he is almost relieved. However, the frozen bodies are a harbinger of something much darker, and soon Wallander must cross the Baltic Sea to Riga, a region caught in the death throes of the Soviet Union. Grappling with espionage, surveillance and a maddeningly elusive enemy, Detective Wallander’s unceasing hunger for justice may be his best and only weapon. Widely regarded as the pinnacle of Nordic noir, Henning Mankell’s Wallander series defined much of what the genre is best known for: realism, social commentary and a relatable central hero. For Wallander’s second outing, series illustrator Morgan Schweitzer has created five exquisitely characterful illustrations and an atmospheric binding design, while this edition also includes an afterword by the author.

Dune by Frank Herbert
Illustrated by Sam Weber
Introduced by Michael Dirda
Afterword by Brian Herbert
Arrakis, or Dune, is a planet of nothingness – its torched wastelands are home to a fierce nomadic people, and under the endless deserts stalk gargantuan sandworms the size of starships. It is a place where water is sacred – ‘a substance more precious than all others’ – where to shed a tear is the most taboo of all sacrifices. And yet the planet is also humanity’s sole source of ‘spice’, the mysterious, addictive substance that underpins the workings of the galaxy-wide Padishah Empire. To control Arrakis is to control all. And it is across its vast expanses and in its arid caves that Frank Herbert’s epic adventure of political subterfuge and messianic deliverance is played out, a story that has become the best-selling science-fiction novel of all time, and is considered by many to be the genre’s greatest work.

Dune: Messiah by Frank Herbert
Illustrated by Hilary Clarcq
Lose yourself once more in the sands of Arrakis with Frank Herbert’s monumental Dune: Messiah. The second instalment of one of the most important sci-fi visions of the 20th century is presented in a unique illustrated edition from Folio. Paul Atreides has been Emperor of the Known Universe for 12 troubled years. He is the most formidable being in the universe, yet powerless to stop the catastrophic galaxy-wide war triggered by his ascension to the throne. Paul’s sweeping, tragic saga is illustrated by award-winning artist – and self-confessed Dune superfan – Hilary Clarcq. This edition also includes Herbert’s elusive ‘Death Cell Interview’ prologue, a dramatic recap of the first book that he wrote for the first UK edition of Dune: Messiah in 1971 and has appeared sporadically in versions ever since. Whether you’re familiar with Dune from the classic novel or the blockbuster movies, the Folio edition of Dune: Messiah is the vital next step in your journey.

The Bard and the Book: How the First Folio Saved the Plays of William Shakespeare from Oblivion by Ann Bausum
Four hundred years ago, no one bothered to write down the exact words of stage plays. Characters’ lines were scribbled on small rolls of paper (as in, an actor’s role) and passed around, but no master script was saved for the future. The main reason we’ve heard of Romeo, Juliet, Hamlet, and Shakespeare himself is that a group of people made the excellent choice to preserve the plays after the Bard died. If they hadn’t created the book known as the First Folio, Shakespeare and his works would surely have been lost to history.

Part literary scavenger hunt (the search for every existing First Folio continues today), part book trivia treasure trove, and part love letter to Shakespeare, this behind-the-scenes, sharply funny true story is an ideal introduction to the Bard and his famous plays.
