Downey Cross Home

Coventry’s Logan Downey crosses home plate during a three-run top of the first inning for the Oakers in Saturday’s non-league game at East Greenwich High School. Despite the strong start, the Oakers were unable to protect a late lead as they fell by a final score of 7-6.

EAST GREENWICH - The first five and a half innings of Saturday’s non-league game between Coventry and East Greenwich belonged to the visiting Oakers.

It was during the final inning and a half that the hometown Avengers managed to flip the script, scoring six unanswered runs as part of a 7-6 come-from-behind rally on a chilly, overcast afternoon.

“It was our second one this year,” head coach Bill O’Connell said of EG’s late-inning heroics, a welcome sign for a team that’s looking to overcome a slow start in the wake of last year’s trip to the D-II finals. “We’ve been struggling scoring runs this year, so it was nice to see them get some hits today and get some runs in. We had some young guys playing today who really came through.”

Among those younger players was sophomore Nelson Anders whose RBI single of of Logan Moore with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning plated Donovan Martin with the game’s winning run.
