Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon, was the sister to Queen Elizabeth II and second daughter of King George VI. Following the outbreak of World War II the young royal moved to Windsor Castle. Princess Margaret was well known for her party-loving reputation and independent spirit. As a young woman she developed a relationship with royal equerry Captain Peter Townsend but faced issues marring him due to the war hero being a recent divorce. In 1960 the Queen’s sister married photographer Anthony Armstrong Jones, however, by 1978 the two divorced. Together they had two children: Lady Sarah Chatto and David Armstrong-Jones. During her later years, Princess Margaret suffered from strokes and other illnesses. The royal died on February 9, 2002 following a stroke.
