Hood River Valley opened its 12-game, Northwest Oregon Conference softball schedule last week with a split of two league games and added a second win in between.
The Eagles won, 21-1, over the Parkrose High Broncos (0-3 NWOC, 0-10 overall) on April 9 at Parkrose High School in Portland. The Eagles (1-1 NWOC, 9-6 overall) jumped in front 3-0 in the first inning, highlighted by a two RBI single by freshman Addison Van Metre (1-for-3). Parkrose responded with a run in the bottom of the inning, making it 3-1.
Following a scoreless second frame, the Eagles blew the game open in the third as they sent 22 batters to the plate. HRV pounded 10 hits, highlighted by a grand slam by senior Marina Castaneda (2-for-2, two walks, four RBI). The Eagles capitalized on a Parkrose error, five walks and they scored twice on wild pitches by Bronco pitchers.
The contest concluded after three innings via the 10-run Mercy Rule. Sophomore pitcher Kenadie Lucas tossed a three-inning no-hitter to lead the Eagles’ defense and she had seven strikeouts and four walks.
The Eagles then faced the Putnam High Kingsmen (1-1 NWOC, 3-6 overall) on April 10 in what was a nonleague contest at Putnam High School in Milwaukie. HRV won 14-3 in a five-inning contest shortened by the 10-run Mercy Rule.
The Eagles built an 8-2 lead in the first inning, highlighted by a two RBI double by Grace Rowan (3-for-4, four RBI) and a two RBI single by Gracyn Hanshaw (2-for-3, three RBI). The Eagles outscored the Kingsmen, 6-1, over the final four innings.
The Eagles followed with a 4-0 road loss at La Salle Prep (2-0 NWOC, 5-6 overall) on April 12 in Milwaukie. Rowan had a solid pitching performance in tossing a two hitter with four strikeouts and five walks. The Eagles had 15 hits and were led offensively by Lucas (2-for-2, two RBI) and Isa Rivera (2-for-3, three RBI).
