BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) - This segment on The Three was paid for and sponsored by The Carlson Law Firm.

You’re involved in a motor vehicle accident. Do you know what to do next?

What you do next will make all the difference from your medical treatment to the compensation for your medical bills, lost wages and more. Injuries may be severe and emotions high, but it is important to remember that there are a few important steps to take immediately following a car crash to ensure your rights are protected.

Kathryn Knotts joined The Three with her legal advice.

First, take a few deep breaths and grab your Carlson Law Firm Do’s and Don’ts checklist.

Be sure to gather all the information you can while police are on their way to the scene.

Knotts says it is important to get the full name and phone number of all witnesses and to take photographs of the vehicles before they are moved, so you can show the angle of impact.

She also recommends getting several pieces of information from the defendant including a copy of their photo ID, a copy of their insurance, a copy of their vehicle registration, and anything that will help your lawyer identify who the legal owner and driver of the vehicle is.

We live in the day and age where our phones and social media are easily accessible, but Knotts encourages you to avoid posting about your accident until you have spoken to your attorney.

Anything you post on social media after a car accident can be used against you in a lawsuit or deny your insurance claim.

Knotts says before you even call your insurance agency, it is best to contact an attorney for advice.
