An attorney representing Kansas City Chiefs player Rashee Rice confirms to PEOPLE on Monday that the NFL star is now “cooperating” with police after Saturday’s six-vehicle collision in Dallas, Texas, that left several injured.

The Dallas Police Department had been searching for Rice, 23, since Saturday because a Chevrolet Corvette involved in the high-speed accident was believed to be registered in Rice’s name.

“Rashee is cooperating with local authorities and will take all necessary steps to address this situation responsibly," attorney Royce West said in a statement to PEOPLE.

While police have yet to confirm the identities of anyone involved in the accident, the attorney said that Rice’s “thoughts are with everyone impacted by the automobile accident on Saturday.”

Authorities previously told PEOPLE that after the collision “occupants of the Lamborghini and the Corvette all ran from the scene without stopping to determine if anyone needed medical help or providing their information.”

The Corvette and a Lamborghini were speeding in the far-left lane of the 6600 block of northbound North Central Expressway shortly before 6:25 p.m., authorities said in a statement about their preliminary investigation.

“The drivers lost control and the Lamborghini traveled onto the shoulder and hit the center median wall, causing a chain reaction collision involving four other vehicles,” they said.

Two people in other vehicles were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries, while two drivers who didn’t leave the scene were treated at the scene by Dallas Fire Rescue for minor injuries.

Rice is well-connected to the Dallas area, having played high school football 30 miles northwest of Dallas in North Richland Hills before suiting up for Southern Methodist University in Dallas during college. Rice's lawyer West, 71, is currently a Texas state senator representing the Dallas area.

The Chiefs drafted the wide receiver during the 2023 NFL Draft. As a rookie, Rice helped the Chiefs win the 2024 Super Bowl in February.
