“What’s changed, Arthur?” asks a character, prompting Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) to respond, “I’m not alone anymore.” The Joker: Folie à Deux trailer teases the union of not just Arthur and Harleen Quinzel (Lady Gaga), but also their alter egos, the notorious Joker and Harley Quinn.
One of the most anticipated Hollywood films of the year, Joker: Folie à Deux, helmed by Todd Phillips, is a direct sequel to the 2019 psychological thriller Joker, and the new trailer reveals that music is just as much a part of Joker and Harley’s lives as the chaos on which they thrive.
The 144-second trailer begins with a close-up of Fleck behind bars, being escorted by guards to an undisclosed location, perhaps inside Arkham Asylum. “Hey Fleck, you got a joke for us today?” asks one of the guards, to which Fleck doesn’t respond. On his way out, Fleck’s gaze meets that of a woman (Gaga) amidst a group rehearsing a song. “I’m nobody. I haven’t done anything with my life like you have,” she says, revealing a deep admiration for Joker, and perhaps making a reference to the mob that he incited in the first film.
As a last glimmer of hope, Quinzel enters Fleck’s life, and as he sits in the middle of an unlit stage, dressed as Joker, with the spotlight shining on him, she turns Quinn for him and says, “Let’s get out of here (jail).”
As they break into a song and dance their hearts out, chaos also erupts around the two, orchestrated by them of course. Gotham City appears to be burning down. The trailer ends with a shot of Quinn putting a smile on Joker’s face, literally.
Unveiling the trailer at the ongoing CinemaCon, the official convention of The National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO), director Phillips said, “It’s a movie where music is an essential element. To me, that doesn’t veer too far from the first film. Arthur has music in him. He has a grace to him,” as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
“We loved the character of Arthur too much, but we didn’t want to jinx the [original] movie,” Phillips said, Variety reported, adding, “We cast Gaga because she’s magic.”
Distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures and produced by DC Studios in association with Joint Effort, Joker: Folie à Deux has Hildur Guðnadóttir, Lawrence Sher and Jeff Groth returning to their respective roles as composer, cinematographer and editor. The film will hit the screens on October 4, 2024.
