AUSTIN, Texas — A man has been charged after a deadly hit-and-run crash in East Austin Friday morning, according to police.
The Austin Police Department (APD) said at approximately 2:30 a.m. Friday, officers responded to the 1700 block of East Riverside Drive, near Parker Lane, after a driver hit a pedestrian. The victim, later identified as Aaron Alcala Hernandez, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said the driver, later identified as Dontay Waffer, left the scene, but officers were soon able to locate and arrest him. Waffer has been charged with accident involving death and DWI.
APD said this is being investigated as Austin's 24th fatal crash of 2024, resulting in 24 deaths so far this year. The investigation is still pending.
