Photo: Coahoma County Sheriff's Office About two weeks after a 13-year-old boy accidentally shot his friend dead inside a home in Lyon, Miss., the alleged shooter’s parents – who were not home at the time – are facing charges connected to the fatal incident. The two 13-year-olds were allegedly “playing with a handgun” unsupervised when one of the children “accidentally pulled the trigger,” hitting his friend “once in the upper torso,” March 15, according to a press release from the Coahoma County Sheriff’s Office. Following a 911 call, sheriff’s deputies rushed to the home in the tiny Delta town of less than 300 people. The first deputy to arrive at the home administered CPR to the injured child, who was rushed to the hospital, where he later died, according to the sheriff’s office. The name of the deceased child – a Coahoma County Junior High School student – is not being released, according to sheriff’s office spokesperson Carol Dixon. The other 13-year-old – whose name is also withheld because of his age – was arrested and charged as an adult with manslaughter by culpable negligence. (Children as young as 13 can be charged as adults in Mississippi, which has among the youngest age exceptions in the country.) His bond was set at $15,000. Gill Marshall, Sr., a convicted felon, allegedly owned the gun that his 13-year-old son accidentally fired, killing another 13-year-old. Coahoma County Sheriff's Office The gun allegedly belonged to his father. Both parents were arrested and charged on March 28. Both Lashaner Marshall, 49, and her husband, Gill Marshall, Sr., 65, are charged with contributing to the neglect or delinquency of a child. Gill Marshall, Sr. is additionally charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The County Court of Coahoma County oversees, among other cases, felony preliminary hearings as well as all juvenile cases. The court administrator could not immediately be reached to determine if any of the Marshall family members had obtained lawyers or yet pleaded to the charges. The parents were both booked at Coahoma County Jail, per Dixon, who tells PEOPLE that both the parents and their son have since bonded out.
