MEMPHIS, Tenn. - A woman is charged with several crimes after police say she hit an officer with a car as police tried to break up a group of reckless drivers in Raleigh Sunday night.

The Memphis Police Department (MPD) said cars were driving recklessly and doing donuts at the intersection of James Road and Highland Road around 7:45 p.m. on Sunday, April 14.

Officers showed up, and the cars sped away, weaving in and out of traffic as police hit their lights, MPD said.

An officer on foot was picking up stop sticks and tried to get a Mustang to stop. Instead police say the driver swerved at the officer, hit him with the car and sped off. The officer was able to read the Mustang's tags, and officers soon pulled over 26-year-old Shatima White.

White is charged with assault on a first responder, reckless driving, disregarding a red light/stop sign and leaving the scene of an accident involving injury.

The officer was taken to Methodist North Hospital in non-critical condition, treated and released to recover at home, MPD said.

The incident occurred less than a week after MPD announced the formation of their Vehicle Takeover Task Force, a unit within the department designed to combat reckless driving.

On the state level, a bill that would raise the penalty of reckless driving and drag racing from a misdemeanor to a felony has been working its way through the Tennessee Legislature.
