Season 25 'The Bachelor' lead Matt James says this AZ restaurant was 'worth the adventure'

"The Bachelor” Season 25 lead Matt James was in Arizona this past weekend for the NCAA Final Four and took to social media to share his thoughts on a popular local food spot.

James is a partner of Nissan USA and was at the Men’s Final Four Tip-Off Tailgate where he interviewed former basketball player Lisa Leslie and former basketball head coach Steve Nash. He has been sharing videos of his travels and food adventures with the winner of his season Rachel Kirkconnell. Although it didn’t seem like Kirkconnell was with him this trip.

“When you find yourself in Phoenix or Scottsdale, Arizona, I highly recommend driving down to Gilbert to check out Topo for a brisket burrito,” James said in a TikTok and Instagram video.

What did Matt James order at Topo in Arizona?

Joe Johnston opened Topo, known for the massive gopher that sits atop the take-out restaurant, as a Route 66-inspired landmark in Gilbert in 2019. He told The Republic: "An ongoing nemesis we have at the farm has always been a gopher, so we decided it had to be a gopher." Topo means gopher in Spanish.

The small food stand serves a short menu of burritos, street corn and soft serve. In a video posted on Wednesday, March 10, James ordered the Topo Loco Burrito, the Brisket Elote and Prickly Pear Soft Serve.

The Topo Loco Burrito costs $12 and comes stuffed with brisket, beans, elote, Fritos corn chips, hot sauce, cilantro, cheese and tomatillo crema. Other versions of the burrito made with chicken, pork or without meat go for $10.

“Thick, juicy chunks of brisket coated in cheese that you can pick right out of the burrito,” James described in the video.

The Brisket Elote is also $12 and is a cup of elote (roasted corn) topped with brisket, Fritos, tomatillo crema, cotija cheese, chile powder, cilantro and lime. James referred to it as “Tex-Mex Jambalaya.”

“Think Chipotle Burrito Bowl, but with ingredients sourced directly from the farm,” he said.

The Prickly Pear Soft Serve costs $5. James got his dipped in a sugar-coated shell. He loved it.

“Not too many places serve up the best burritos and ice cream in town,” James said, wrapping up the video. “Topo is worth the adventure. A small menu is always a good sign, but don’t take my word for it, pull up for yourself.”
