Despite previous reports that Yellowstone star Kevin Costner was departing the critically-acclaimed series, the actor has revealed that he’s not quite ready to ride off into the sunset just yet.

While speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Costner shared his take on a potential Season 5 return. The actor said he’d “like to be able to do it but we haven’t been able to,” per The Hollywood Reporter.

“I thought I was going to make seven [seasons] but right now we’re at five,” he added. “So how it works out — I hope it does — but they’ve got a lot of different shows going on. Maybe it will. Maybe this will circle back to me. If it does and I feel really comfortable with [it], I’d love to do it.”

These remarks seemingly confirm a March 25 Puck report, which claimed that Costner had been “telling people he’s planning to return for at least a cameo and possibly more, but there are currently no discussions for him to do that.”

Costner had also previously said that he “will probably go to court” over securing his salary for the second part of Season 5, per People. Nonetheless, the Puck report also mentioned that “even if Costner significantly lowers his financial and time commitment demands, [showrunner Taylor] Sheridan may not want to bother reopening his finished scripts to accommodate a send-off for John Dutton,” per THR.

Costner also shared his thoughts with ET on what he’d hope to see in his character, John Dutton, claiming that “he needs to be provocative in what happens,” and that he’s actually “kind of has [his] own fantasy [of] how it might be.” However, he highlighted that that’s ultimately up to Sheridan.

“But that’s Taylor’s thing,” he clarified. “I said as much to him a while back. I had thoughts how it could happen, but we just have to see.”

Yellowstone Season 5, Part 2 has reportedly already been written, and is slated to air this November, but as noted by ET, its stars appear to be unaware of what will take place in the upcoming final installment. During a March 20 appearance on Watch What Happens Live, Josh Lucas, who plays the younger version of Costner’s John Dutton, noted that Sheridan is “a closed book,” and claimed he “does everything himself.”

As for Costner, his upcoming two-part Western Horizon: An American Saga scored a spot in the Cannes Film Festival lineup for its world premiere on May 19. The film’s theatrical release will take place in two parts this summer.

In the meantime, Yellowstone is streaming on Peacock Premium.
