UPDATE: 94-year-old arrested in fatal hit-and-run crash

An elementary school teacher in Bergen County was identified as the pedestrian who was fatally struck by a hit-and-run driver Thursday night, according to the Englewood Public School District.

Elizabeth Rosa, 54, was struck about 5:20 p.m. at the intersection of Washington Avenue and Madison Avenue in Dumont, authorities said.

The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement on Thursday that the driver fled the scene. Late Friday, the prosecutor’s office announced that Ernest F. Hofmann, 94, of Bergenfield had been arrested and charged in the fatal crash.

Rosa lived in Dumont, public records show.

“It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we share the tragic news of the passing of our esteemed colleague and cherished friend, Elizabeth Rosa,” the school district said in a statement posted on its website.

Rosa taught dual language to first-grade students at Grieco Elementary School since September 2005. She was married, and was a mother and grandmother, the statement said.

“Known for her infectious smile, boundless energy, and unwavering dedication, she touched the lives of countless students, colleagues, and families,” the district said. “In her classroom, Mrs. Rosa exemplified both compassion and discipline, earning the adoration of her students while instilling in them a love for learning.”

The district said it was providing grief counseling to all students and employees.
