Runoff elections – including decisions on the crucial District 2 Congressional race – are being held today.

Here’s a look at what you need to know for the April 16 runoffs.

How did we get here

Candidates for the runoff were selected in the March 5 primary. Not all races required a runoff, but those that do will be on Tuesday’s ballot.

Is it too late to register?

If you haven’t registered for the runoff yet, it’s too late. Oct. 21 is the deadline to register for the general election.

What time do polls open; what time do they close?

Polls will open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m.

Do I need photo ID? Yes, Alabama law requires photo ID. You can go here to see a list of acceptable ID.

What’s the rule on crossover voting?

Alabama’s crossover voting rule has been in place since 2017. Here’s how it works: if a person votes in a primary election, you can only vote in that party’s runoff. You can’t “crossover” to cast a ballot in the other party’s primary. For example, if you voted in the Democratic primary, you can’t vote in the Republican runoff and vice versa.

District 2 headlines races

Runoffs for the District 2 Congressional race headlines the day’s races. Alabama Democrats are hoping the 2nd district congressional seat plays a role in flipping the U.S. House where Republicans currently hold a slim four-seat majority.

D-2 covers Mobile and Montgomery counties, as well as all or portions of 11 other counties. For Republicans, former State Senator Dick Brewbaker faces attorney Caroleene Dobson. Brewbaker was the highest vote getter in a crowded five-candidate field.

Among Democrats, Shomari Figures faces Anthony Daniels. Figures, the top primary vote getter, served as deputy chief of staff and counselor for U.S. Attorney Gen. Merrick Garland in the Biden administration. Daniels has been the Alabama House of Representatives minority leader since 2017.

Jefferson County

All of the runoffs in Jefferson County are among Democrats. For District Court Judge, Jefferson County, Place No. 3, Birmingham Division, Pamela Wilson Cousins faces Jacquelyn Grant-Jones. For Jefferson County Probate Judge, Place No. 1 Yashiba “Red” Blanchard faces Yawanna Nabors McDonald.

Morgan County

In Morgan County, there’s a runoff among GOP candidates for the District 3 seat on the Morgan County Commission. Matthew K. Frost opposes Don “Stish” Stisher. Stisher led the March primary voting with almost 39% of the 14,000-plus votes cast in that race.

When is the general election?

The general election – which includes the presidential race – is Nov. 5.
