1974: Buzz Aldrin, Apollo II astronaut, to speak

1999 – 25 years ago

  • Former Austin High School pitching standout Mike Wuertz has been assigned to the Class A Lansing (Mich.) Lugnuts for the start of the 1999 season. (Wuertz would debut professionally with the Chicago Cubs on April 5, 2004).
  • The Kenyon-Wanamingo High School Drama Department will present the musical “Meet Me in St. Louis” in the high school auditorium in Kenyon.

1974 – 50 years ago

  • Col. Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin, Jr., one of the Apollo II moonwalkers, will speak on his historic walk on the moon. Aldren authored the book, “Return to Earth,” describing his moonwalk and the emotional problems he suffered subsequently. Aldrin will speak at the Olmsted County Mental Health Association’s annual Russell Wilder Seminar.

1949 – 75 years ago

  • Plans are underway for the Minnesota Territorial Centennial pageant to be presented at Whitewater State Park on July 30 and 31.
  • Ole Applen will celebrate his 99th birthday this Easter. Born in Norway, Ole came to America with his family as a youngster. He was a farmer and mechanic in the area and is now retired.
  • Schools and most government offices will be closed in observance of the Good Friday holiday.

1924 – 100 years ago

  • The north side of the Oronoco dam gave way, allowing the waters of Lake Shady to pour into the mill dam stream. The reason is unknown, as the water level was low.
  • The Rochester Junior College will present an original production entitled “Captain Applejack.” Students in the cast include Roscoe Millet, Julia Connor, Irene Conaty, and George Waldron.
  • The Rochester city engineer has been approved to hire a stenographer to assist him in his duties. The new position will pay $135 a month.
