ST. CHARLES — A man held a woman hostage for about two hours Monday inside a vehicle in a garage near St. Charles City Hall.
The standoff ended just after noon. No injuries were reported.
The incident began in the nearby St. Charles County courthouse, and police responded just before 10 a.m. for a report of shots fired in the garage, near North Second and Monroe streets. A woman was also heard screaming.
When police arrived, the man was holding the woman hostage inside the vehicle. He told negotiators he was armed.
The woman was released just before 12:10 p.m., and the man was taken into police custody.
Police said they think the man and woman are married. They also said the man was “known” to officers.
St. Charles Mayor Dan Borgmeyer said a mental health professional, hostage negotiators and SWAT team members had responded to talk to the man.

Officials said City Hall employees and courthouse employees continued to work during the standoff but were told to stay off elevators and stairs.
