Why a Monthly Flower Subscription Makes the Perfect Gift

Need a thoughtful gift idea for mom, an upcoming anniversary or just because? Fresh flowers! Whether it’s a special arrangement for the occasion or a monthly subscription, any recipient would be delighted to receive a lively bouquet of blooms. Seasonal creations are always available, so you don’t have to settle for just a dozen red roses—you can pick a bouquet that’ll truly speak to your giftee, whether’s it the environmentally conscious coworker (think Farmgirl Flowers) or your minimalist fashion friend (Flowerbx). Plus, depending on your zip code, most of these services offer same or next-day delivery. Besides flowers are a foolproof gift, and a recurring delivery is a gift that keeps on giving.

Best types of flowers to gift

Justin Lievano, floral designer and educator at UrbanStems tells Vogue his favorite flowers to gift (for any occasion) are those that transform over time. A great example are tulips, he says, “as they move and bend in the vase, plus can grow up to nine inches once they’re in water.” He adds, “Watching them develop creates a new experience every time you see them, and it’s really magical!” Peonies, ranunculi, roses—all these flowers have their own growth phases so pick whatever seasonal bloom speaks to you and/or your giftee.

How long do flowers last

“Most bouquets will last about seven days, depending on the varieties of flowers included,” Lievano says. Dahlias, for example, he says, typically last four or five days, while some roses can last up to two weeks with proper care.

What makes flowers last longer

Lievano has many tips, but he stresses clean water as the most important. “To truly maximize vase life, you’ll want to trim your stems and change the water in the vase every two days or so.” He likens flower stems to big straws, “and bacterial growth that blocks up those straws ultimately kills your flowers!”

Another pro tip he shares? Keep your flowers out of sunlight and away from heat to further discourage bacterial growth. Keeping them away from any produce is also essentials, Lievano says, as “ripening fruit and veggies release ethylene gas, which ages flowers.”

Lastly, as you enjoy your flowers, Lievano recommends pulling out any that begin to wilt since these “also emit ethylene gas that damages their neighbors in the vase.”

How to send flowers to someone

Signing up for a subscription is as easy as placing any online order—choose the frequency, type of bouquet, and add in all the relevant info. Some services offer add-ons, so make sure to opt in (or out) to get the most out of your experience. And if you or your giftee is planning a trip in the near future, you can also schedule deliveries around those times to ensure no bouquet is left unattended on the doorstep.
