4 injured, 1 critically when tree falls on vehicle in Opelousas as high winds cause major damage across Acadiana

(KADN) — The National Weather Service reported four people were injured, one critically, when a tree fell on a car near the Yambilee Building in Opelousas. It was part of the damage caused by wild weather that passed through Acadiana on Wednesday, April 10.

The person who was critically injured was flown to a Baton Rouge hospital by helicopter for treatment. NWS will send a team to Opelousas to survey the damage to determine if it was caused by a tornado but the team may not make it to the area until Thursday.

Powerful storms downed trees and knocked out power to thousands in St. Landry Parish, Acadia Parish, Evangeline Parish, St. Martin Parish, and other parts of Acadiana.

Strong winds in St. Landry Parish tore off the roof of a family's house in the Sunset area. An early morning storm ripped through parts of Acadia and St. Landry parishes that damaged homes, property, and caused power outages.

One family in Church Point in Acadia Parish is thankful that things didn't turn out any worse after a tree fell on their house during stormy weather.

There was even more significant damage in St. Landry and Acadia parishes to report on. In Port Barre, high winds damaged a home. In Church Point, viewer Angela Vautrot sent us video of a carport on LA 754 being blown away.

There are reports of downed trees and power lines in Church Point, Opelousas, Sunset, Washington, and Youngsville after strong storms moved through Acadiana.

Storm Track 15 meteorologist Michael Crowley discovered a downed tree in Church Point that also knocked out power.

Mary Laurent, Communications Coordinator for SLEMCO, stopped by News15 at Noon to give an update on power outages for Acadiana following a sever line of storms Wednesday morning.

The St. Landry Parish Government reported 32,000 customers were without power at one point, which is about 68% of the parish. Officials said 20 power lines fell north of Washington and about 30 roads across the parish had downed trees on them.

Officials in St. Landry Parish said eight power poles fell LA 10 near I-49 in Washington. As of 4:30 p.m., the following roads remained closed:

  • Sunnydale Road in Opelousas
  • Kennerson Road in Opelousas
  • Sugar Mill Road in Opelousas
  • Hypolite Miller Road in Sunset

DOTD reported crews are working to remove trees from roadways along sections of LA 10 in Evangeline Parish.

The National Weather Service confirmed an EF-2 tornado with 115 mph winds touched down in Lake Charles and was on the ground for a little over a mile.
