TEE-TIME TALES: Gnomes are must-have item at Augusta, but what piece of merchandise has already sold out? As Niall Horan is spotted heading in only one direction and Jason Day's clothing choice raises eyebrows

  • Huge queues have wound their way outside of the Masters' merchandise stores
  • One Direction star Niall Horan is seen watching on with the crowds on Thursday
  • Jason Day has raised eyebrows over his baggy trousers and Malbon vest

Earlier this week Tee-Time Tales reported how gnomes were the must-have item for patrons at Augusta National.

However, there is now a new craze in the retail stores situated around the famous course: Masters sunglasses.

Shades featuring various designs of iconic Augusta landmarks have been selling out in rapid fashion.

Priced at $39, those on offer include ‘The Hogan Bridge’, ‘Florals’ and ‘Azalea’.

The Hogan Bridge was the first to run out of stock and with beautiful weather forecast for the rest of the tournament the glasses will be yet another nice earner for Augusta bosses.

Augusta's patrons show respect

Much has been made of the deterioration in the behaviour of golf crowds across the Atlantic following some raucous scenes at previous events.

Amid wild scenes at February’s Phoenix Open 54 people were arrested, with 211 kicked out.

Witnesses reported a series of staggering incidents, including claims that some were having sex on the course.

One fan performed a ‘snow angel’ in a bunker, while others streaked and slid down mud hills.

Such scenes, thankfully, have not unfolded at Augusta, where patrons, as you might expect, have been respectful and well-behaved across the practice days and first two rounds of the competition.

One Direction watch on

Niall Horan was only heading in one direction — and that was to follow Rory McIlroy.

The pop singer owns a global management and marketing firm for some of the sport’s leading names and is a big friend of the Northern Irishman.

Horan was also spotted chatting with Europe Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald.

The One Direction star’s bandmate Harry Styles has also been spotted walking the Augusta course.

Fans had reported on Thursday evening that they had seen Styles walking the course at Augusta

Jason Day raises eyebrows

While Tommy Fleetwood won praise for his smart cardigan, the same cannot be said of Jason Day, whose clothing choices this week have raised eyebrows.

The 36-year-old Queenslander was the subject of much online discussion having taken part in a practice round in a tank top which some compared to a pack of cigarettes, while his baggy trousers on Thursday led to jokes about 90s rapper MC Hammer.

Day has a deal with luxury golf fashion brand Malbon, who have become known for their edgy take.

Ryder Cup star leads the way

Danish sensation Nicolai Hojgaard’s first round 67 was the best first-round score from a European on debut.

The 23-year-old, part of the winning Ryder Cup team last year, matched the effort of David Gilford in 1995. Former English amateur champion Gilford, from Crewe, went on to tie for 24th place.
