RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – Shaw University played host to a special guest with strong football ties to the Triangle on Monday evening.

Former North Carolina Tar Heels and Pittsburgh Steelers running back Willie Parker was the guest speaker during the university’s annual athletics banquet at C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.

During Monday’s event, the two-time Super Bowl winner told student-athletes about the qualities it takes to be a champion, such as hard work, discipline, leadership as well as the desire to do more.

After being signed by the Steelers as an undrafted free agent out of North Carolina, Parker compiled 1,253 carries for 5,378 yards on the ground, as well as tallied 84 catches for 679 yards and 29 total touchdowns over his six-year career in the NFL. The Clinton native also earned two Pro Bowl selections in 2006 and 2007.

Shaw University’s booster club also presented a $6,000 check to support the athletics department on Monday.
