A Lapeer County man is jailed and awaiting criminal charges after he allegedly tried to pass another car and crashed into a dirt bike driver in northern Macomb County, according to police.

Michigan State Police said the incident happened about 8:45 p.m. Monday on Brown Road, south of Reid Road, in rural Bruce Township.

According to the preliminary investigation, a 55-year-old Imlay City man was driving his Dodge Ram pickup truck south on Brown Road when he used the northbound travel lane to pass another vehicle.

While the truck was still in the oncoming travel lane, it crashed head on into a dirt bike headed in the opposite direction, State Police said.

The 53-year-old dirt bike driver from Romeo was transported to a hospital by EMS, but was later pronounced dead, investigators said.

The pickup truck driver was not hurt in the crash, police said.

State troopers determined the pickup truck driver had been impaired. He was taken into custody and is being held in the Macomb County Jail pending a case review by prosecutors.

MSP F/Lt. Mike Shaw again urged motorists to not drink and drive.

“Another family is mourning the loss of a loved one due to a preventable traffic crash,” he said. “There are too many options available to get behind the wheel impaired.”
