Jon Stewart invokes God's pronouns, mocks conservatives calling eclipse a biblical warning

"How crazy would it be if God insisted on they/them?" Stewart joked after Marjorie Taylor Greene said the recent earthquake and eclipse are signs "to repent."

The only thing that might trigger conservative Georgia congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene more than an apocalyptic earthquake/eclipse combo might be Jon Stewart playfully speculating on God's pronouns.

Stewart returned to The Daily Show desk Monday night for his weekly monologue, which saw the comedian mock Greene after she suggested on X that Friday's 4.8-magnitude earthquake on the east coast — coupled with Monday's historic eclipse — were "signs to tell us to repent" in America.

"How do you know? How would you know that that is what God meant? Why would God be so obtuse?" Stewart asked. "Why would he do that — or, she. Why would she. Or, how crazy would it be if God insisted on they/them?"

Stewart continued, asking Greene if she really thought this is "how God works" in mysterious ways.

"I must let man know to repent their wickedness," Stewart said, embodying an almighty God as he changed the octave of his voice to make the point. "I don't know, dim the lights for like, four minutes in a very specific path?" he continued. "Give New Jersey a little shake?"

The Daily Show isn't the only TV series to break down the aftermath of the earthquake. On Friday, The View cohosts reflected on the moment the quake hit their Manhattan studio, with Ana Navarro suggesting that she needed tequila after feeling the earth move, while Sunny Hostin said she was so distracted by listening to Beyoncé in her dressing room that she didn't even feel it.

Stewart appears on The Daily Show Mondays at 11 p.m. ET/PT on Comedy Central. Watch Stewart discuss the earthquake and eclipse in the video above.
