FIFA executives to meet with Spanish government and FA after scandals

FIFA executives to meet with Spanish government and FA after scandals

FIFA representatives travelled to Madrid to meet with the Spanish government and Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) following a number of recent scandals at Spanish’s football governing body.

FIFA general secretary Mattias Grafstrom and FIFA legal director Emilio Silvero were in Madrid on Thursday for a meeting with Spain’s Superior Sports Council (the CSD) — the government agency responsible for the country’s sporting policy — with the aim of stabilising the situation at the RFEF.

Spain’s role at the 2030 World Cup, which the country is co-hosting alongside Morocco and Portugal, is also expected to be discussed.

USMNT up to 11th in latest world rankings, England down to fourth

USMNT up to 11th in latest world rankings, England down to fourth

The USMNT have climbed up to 11th in the latest FIFA men’s world rankings, while England have dropped to fourth.

Following their CONCACAF Nations League victories over Jamaica and Mexico in March, Gregg Berhalter’s U.S. side have moved up two places to 11th, just behind Croatia who complete the top 10.

Gareth Southgate’s England, though, have failed to secure a victory in their last three games, drawing with Belgium and losing to Brazil during the March international break, having drawn with North Macedonia in their final European Championship qualifier in November.

Rubiales’ return to Spain: Wiretaps, allegations and an airport arrest

Rubiales’ return to Spain: Wiretaps, allegations and an airport arrest

Wednesday was another dramatic day in the saga involving former Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) president Luis Rubiales, as an investigation into alleged corruption during his term from 2018 to 2023 gathers pace.

The 46-year-old was detained by police officers and questioned about his role in potential crimes of money laundering and misuse of RFEF funds. Investigators believe Rubiales and a number of his associates were involved in a number of different schemes linking Spain, the Dominican Republic, Saudi Arabia and China.

Rubiales resigned as RFEF president in September, having already been provisionally suspended by FIFA for his behaviour after Spain won the 2023 Women’s World Cup, when he held his crotch in celebration just a few seats down from Queen Letizia and the 16-year-old Princess Sofia of Spain, before grabbing star forward Jenni Hermoso by the head and kissing her on the lips during the medal ceremony.

Bronze calls for alterations to women's football calendar

England defender Lucy Bronze has called for alterations to the women’s football calendar to ease the physical demands on the players.

Bronze, speaking ahead of England’s European Championship qualifiers against Sweden and Republic of Ireland, echoed the comments of a number of teammates and managers, who have raised concerns over whether the schedule is contributing to long-term injuries.

England captain Leah Williamson has just returned into the squad following an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury and there has been a spate of similar injuries in the women’s game.

“Obviously, the demands are getting higher,” Bronze says.

“I think even when I was at Lyon it was quite hard for me personally. I had two days off from the Champions League final and went straight into World Cup preparations. So it's not something that I'm not used to.

“For me, personally, I'm part of FIFPro and I have joined discussions, along with Sarina (Wiegman, England manager) with FIFA and UEFA, but ultimately, it's down to them to help programme the calendar better, not just for the good of the game, but the wellness of the players involved.

“There is a lot of back and forth. Everyone has their different opinions, everybody has their way of wanting to work, but I think, hopefully, there are ideas that people can come up with to maybe alter a few things.

“I think a few alterations could make a huge difference for the players especially."

Williamson ‘ready’ to feature for England in Euro qualifiers

Williamson ‘ready’ to feature for England in Euro qualifiers

Leah Williamson is “ready” to feature for England during their European Championship qualifiers — if she comes through Thursday’s training session unscathed.

Williamson, 27, had been a doubt for this month’s matches after she was replaced at half-time during Arsenal’s Continental Cup final victory over Chelsea on Sunday, with manager Jonas Eidevall explaining this was due to a “medical situation”.

Williamson captained England to their Euro 2022 success but has not featured for the Lionesses since suffering an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in April 2023, which forced her to miss last summer’s World Cup. She has been named in Sarina Wiegman’s last two squads but withdrew from February’s camp due to a hamstring injury.

Ten Hag blames individual errors for Man Utd's defeat at Chelsea

Ten Hag blames individual errors for Man Utd's defeat at Chelsea

Erik ten Hag criticised his Manchester United side for failing to see out a victory in their 4-3 defeat at Chelsea, saying that his players "didn't make the right decisions".

United conceded two goals in stoppage time — with Cole Palmer scoring twice and sealing his hat-trick — to ensure they came away with no points from Stamford Bridge.

Ten Hag said, as quoted by Reuters: "I had the feeling we were dominating the game, got ourselves into a winning position, scoring great goals.

"Then, in stoppage time, we didn't manage to win. Of course it's frustrating.

"We made individual errors that cost us the game. The players know their jobs and they didn't make the right decisions. We have to read when to keep the ball, to pass, move and switch the play when we are winning.

"In five days we dropped five points. That is unacceptable. We gave away a game we should have won."

Ten Hag's side had overturned a two-goal deficit to lead 3-2 thanks to a brace from Alejandro Garnacho and a header from Bruno Fernandes.

United had been leading up until the 99th minute, but individual errors contributed to the defeat, with Diogo Dalot giving away a penalty after bringing down Noni Madueke in the box, before Palmer's deflected effort found its way into the back of the net.

Former Spurs owner Lewis avoids prison, fined $5m for insider trading

Joe Lewis, the founder of the company which owns Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur, has avoided prison for insider trading and conspiracy but must pay a $5million fine and serve three years’ probation, a Manhattan court judge has ruled.

The 87-year-old British billionaire pleaded guilty in January after being indicted in the United States last July for “orchestrating a brazen insider trading scheme”. This, according to U.S. officials, involved the passing of information to “romantic partners and his private pilots.”

U.S. sentencing guidelines had called for Lewis to serve 18 to 24 months in prison.

However, prior to sentencing, federal prosecutors agreed with Lewis’ attorneys that, given Lewis' age, medical issues and willingness to come to the United States to face criminal charges, he had earned leniency in his sentencing.

“Mr. Lewis is grateful that the court has imposed a probationary sentence that considers his health issues,” Mark Herr, his spokesperson told reporters outside of the courtroom. “As Mr. Lewis has previously stated, he regrets the decisions that led to this day.”

Lewis, a U.K. citizen and resident of the Bahamas, will immediately leave the U.S. and be banned from re-entering the country, where his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren reside.

Pochettino optimistic Man Utd win will be a turning point for Chelsea

Mauricio Pochettino expressed his hope that Thursday's 4-3 comeback against Manchester United will serve as a defining moment in Chelsea's season, believing it will foster a sense of "trust" among supporters.

Cole Palmer sealed the victory with a winning goal during 11 minutes of injury time, completing his hat-trick shortly after equalising from the penalty spot moments before.

Pochettino ran onto the pitch in joy having seen his side initially slip a two-goal lead.

He said, as quoted by Reuters:"It was amazing. We were the better team today and it was fair we scored in the last minute.

"We started really well, 2-0 (up), the game was under control, then we made a mistake and suffered an emotional impact. It wasn't easy to deal with. In the second half we controlled the game (but) conceded in transitions.

"It was important to finish like that, creating the connection between our fans and players. It's a very good thing that happened today. It should be a turning point for the fans' trust in the team."

Klopp full of praise for 'super important player' Mac Allister

Jurgen Klopp hailed Alexis Mac Allister as a "super important player" after his superb goal set Liverpool on their way to victory over Sheffield United.

The Argentina international fired in from the edge of the box to finally put Klopp's side ahead for good in a 3-1 win at Anfield.

The three points see them return to the top of the Premier League table with eight games of the season to go.

It is not the first decisive contribution from the summer signing from Brighton & Hove Albion in recent weeks and Klopp was full of praise.

"Super important player for us. Wonderful boy," he said.

"I met his dad after the game. He said 'thank you'. I said: 'gracias'. I also said 'hola' then my Spanish ended. I am really happy for Liverpool that we got Macca."

Asked about where he thinks he plays best, he added: "If you talk about Macca and whether he's better as a No 8 or a No 6, they are two different subjects.

"What's his defensive part like? It's obviously really good. People doubted whether he could be that kind of defensive midfielder.

"I prefer him as the No 8 but we're not living in dreamland. We had a problem on the position tonight (with Endo missing) and in the end it worked out.

"We saw that it would be helpful to have him between the right lines. The impact he can have is massive from everywhere."

Man United deserved to win the game - Ten Hag

Erik ten Hag believes Manchester United deserved to win against Chelsea and lamented how side managed the game in the last-gasp defeat at Stamford Bridge.

Two Alejandro Garnacho goals had seen United come from 2-0 down to lead 3-2 heading into added time.

But, just as they did in the draw at Brentford on Saturday, United failed to see the game out from a winning position with Cole Palmer first scoring a penalty to level the scores before firing in the winner a minute later.

Ten Hag believes his side did enough to win and cannot afford to "give it away" as they did.

"Yes we started poor, kicking the ball away and defending poorly," he told TNT Sports. "But you saw we were dominating the game and it was brilliant how we played — we deserved to win the game.

“But, you cannot give it away like we did and we have to manage this game better. It is a team performance, you can point to one of the players but it is about team performance.

“When it gets chaotic you have to deal with it as a team and we made the wrong decisions and we didn’t help out as a team.”

Cole Palmer says "there is nothing better" after he scored twice in stoppage time to help Chelsea come back and beat Manchester United.

Mauricio Pochettino's side saw an early 2-0 lead evaporate and go behind before Palmer was given the chance to equalise from the penalty spot deep into added time.

Just as he had in the first-half he made no mistake before firing in via a deflection a minute later to spark bedlam on the pitch and in the stands at Stamford Bridge.

Asked how his side did it, Palmer said: "I don't know! 2-0 up and like I said last week we had silly mistakes. When the eight minutes got added on it gave us a lift – madness.

"We need to try to win as many games as possible. To win like that, there is nothing better.

"We thought when we scored the second goal the fans lifted us and I saw the gaffer say there were two minutes left and thankfully I scored."

On his prowess from 12 yards, he told TNT Sports: "You know I have taken many penalties, I am not going to miss a penalty, touch wood. To score in the last minute is crazy."
