Westminster Kennel Club Shares 'Pup Quiz' To See How Well People Know Dog Breeds
Do you remember taking pop quizzes in school? They were nerve-wracking and nobody looked forward to them. Lucky for us, this pop quiz that Westminster Kennel Club shared recently is a fun one! They shared the video on Sunday, March 31st, and fans had fun trying to guess the answer.
The 'Pup Quiz' included three separate clues that would lead us to the answer of the correct dog breed. In this quiz, we were shown photos of a dog's skin, nose, and ears. Check it out and see if you can determine what kind of dog the WKC is giving us clues for!
Did you get it right? I didn't! I thought it was maybe a Bulldog...specifically a French Bulldog, but the nose wasn't right. I like how the described its nose as 'hippo like'! The correct answer, a Shar Pei, didn't even pop into my head for some reason!

Facts About Unique Looking Shar Peis
I think it goes without saying that a Shar Pei's appearance is an attention getter. All of those wrinkles, the large, prominent head, and their scowling expression aren't something that most of us see very often! And like Chow Chows, they have another unique feature, a black tongue. Interestingly, these are the only two breeds to have a dark colored tongue.
Like Chows, Shar Peis are loyal to family, but standoffish with strangers and people they don't see regularly. They make great companion dogs and guardian dogs and are protective of their territory. The AKC says, "Early training and socialization are essential; a dominant adult Shar-Pei without them is a serious problem waiting to happen." They also call Shar Peis one of the most ancient breeds around, and their ancestry can be traced back to China more than 2,000 years ago.
For the majority of its history, the Shar Pei was a fighting dog. Other names include, "oriental fighting dog,” the "Chinese bulldog,” or the "oriental gladiator."
Fact Retriever shared this interesting fact: "The term "Shar-Pei" means “sand skin” or “sand-paper-like coat,” which refers the dog’s bristle-like coat. The Shar-Pei actually has the ability to use its coat as a defense mechanism. It can stiffen it when it is attacked to make it uncomfortable for another dog to hold in its mouth. Additionally, when rubbed backwards, its prickly coat can cause welts on a sensitive person’s skin."
Ever wonder what all of those wrinkles are for? Younger dogs have more wrinkles and it's a form of protection against attacks and bites. As they age, their wrinkles become less pronounced.
Like other dogs known for being aggressive or with a history of fighting, like Pitbulls, Rottweilers, and German Shepherds, some insurance companies refuse to insure these dogs or raise rates significantly on homeowner's insurance.
Whether a Shar Pei appeals to you or not, they certainly can be described as unique!
