The Lehigh Valley will see more rain and cooler temperatures following a warmer start to the week.

The National Weather Service said showers are likely Wednesday night and Thursday, with a lower chance of rain Friday.

Temperatures are expected to be in the high 50s or low 60s then, too, according to forecasters. That is a departure from the temperatures in the 70s the area had the past few days.

The Allentown area recorded high temperatures of 74 and 77 on Sunday and Monday, respectively, according to weather service data. Temperatures are expected be a little cooler Tuesday, with a high of 71 expected.

Widespread showers and thunderstorms are possible Wednesday night into Thursday, according to forecasters. Temperatures are also supposed to drop Thursday, with a high of 54 expected.

A cold front could hit the area Friday. Temperatures will be in the 50s and 60s during the weekend, according to forecasters. The weekend should be clear.

Here is the extended forecast from the National Weather Service:

Wednesday: Showers, mainly after 2 p.m. High near 61. East wind around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Wednesday Night: Showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 11 p.m. Low around 48. East wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Thursday: Showers likely, mainly before 2 p.m. Cloudy, with a high near 54. East wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Thursday Night: A chance of showers before 8 p.m. Cloudy, with a low around 44. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Friday: A chance of showers after 2 p.m. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 62. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Friday Night: A chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 48. Chance of precipitation is 50%.

Saturday: Partly sunny, with a high near 65.

Saturday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 42.

Sunday: Partly sunny, with a high near 59.

Sunday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 40.

Monday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 61.
