Lampasas’ last state championship was won in 2019, but Asa White hopes to end the drought.

Five years ago, Cameron Everts placed first in the 300-meter hurdles at the University Interscholastic League Class 4A Track & Field State Meet, giving the Badgers their first state title since 2014.

Wednesday at Lago Vista, White moved one step closer to replicating Everts’ feat by placing second in the 300 hurdles at the area meet with a time of 40.52 seconds.

But the senior has afforded himself other opportunities to make history as well.

Competing against the top performers from the District 23 and District 24 meets, White won the long jump with a mark of 21 feet, 5 inches, and he was fourth in the 110 hurdles, finishing in 15.66.

The top four finishers in each event moved on to the two-day Region III meet at Bullard starting April 19, and he will be surrounded by familiar faces after Lampasas was third as a team.

Helping amass the Badgers’ 71 points, senior Ayden Shaw was second (51.06) in the 400 and helped Lampasas win the 1,600 relay, joining Aaron Everts, Sean Smith and Ty Johnson to finish in 3:24.59.

Additionally, with Jaden Phillips and Dacoda Fry replacing Shaw and Smith, the Badgers’ 800 relay team was second (1:30.93).

Also scoring points for Lampasas was sophomore Shawn Roberts (5th, 300 hurdles, 43.23), junior Brayden Phillips (6th, 3,200, 10:27.41), sophomore Carter Kuhn (6th, pole vault, 11-6) and Smith (6th, 400, 52.02).

Burnet won the area championship with 122 points – 18 more than the host Vikings (2nd, 104).

With 56 points apiece, Gatesville and Waco Connally tied for fourth place as the Hornets qualified for regionals in six events.

Daniel Gonzales, a junior, won the 400 in 49.93 and joined Cory Burns, Lawson Mooney and Ricky Villigrana to place second (43.90) in the 400 relay. Burns, a senior, was also second in the 200 (22.71),

while Mooney, a senior, was fourth (11.35) in the 100.

Gatesville will also be represented at the regional meet by senior Zach Bryant (4th, discus, 121-11) and the 1,600 relay quartet of Nevin Benning, Jastin Muegge, Cameron Thompson and Gonzales, who combined for a time of 3:31.92.

Just missing out on moving on for the Hornets were fifth-place finishers Amos Phillips (pole vault, 13-0) and Bryant (shot put, 44-1½).

Salado was also in attendance, placing seventh with 47 points as four athletes advanced in five events.

Jackson Bragg, a senior, was the Eagles’ lone area champion, winning the pole vault by clearing 15-9 to go along with a second-place time of 11.26 in the 100, while junior teammate Luke Anderson was third (9:55.75) in the 3,200 and fourth (4:28.76) in the 1,600.

Coulson Boyd, a junior, followed Anderson in the 3,200, placing fourth (9:56.17), and freshman Daniel Anderson captured a bronze medal in the 800 with a time of 2:00.53.

Boyd fell just shy of qualifying in the 1,600, placing fifth (4:29.23) to match the outing from senior teammate Alex Hauck (800, 2:03.41), who was also part of Salado’s fifth-place 1,600 relay (3:32.74) team with Bragg, Daniel Anderson and Luke Anderson.

Sixth-place finishes were produced by Gatesville’s Kase Cox (long jump, 20-3) and Muegge (800, 2:04.49) and Salado junior Anthony Angell (high jump, 5-10).

With the state meet just one competition away, athletes must place either first or second at the regional meet or have the next best performance from across the four regions.
