FALL RIVER, Mass. (WPRI) — A Somerset man appeared in court Monday for allegedly trying to lure two teenage girls into his car, but his defense attorney and family members believe police have it all wrong.

Swansea police said 60-year-old Michael Nutbrown approached the two 13-year-olds while they were walking home from school last Thursday in the area Milford Road.

The girls told police they first saw the suspect drive past and look back at them “weird,” which made them uncomfortable. At that point, according to police, surveillance video shows Nutbrown pull into the Target parking lot and start moving items from the inside of his car to the trunk, as if to make space.

Nutbrown then allegedly got back into the car, pulled up to the teenagers and asked if they needed a ride. The girls instead took off running and called police.

Nutbrown was arraigned Monday on a charge of attempted kidnapping. In court, prosecutors revealed that after the interaction, Nutbrown drove to Walmart, and police were able to identify him as the suspect through his transaction there.

The defense, however, argued in court that the allegations aren’t true. His attorney claimed that all Nutbrown did was ask the girls if they were OK after he thought he saw them almost get hit by another car.

Several of Nutbrown’s family members attended the arraignment to support him.

“He would never do that, because he has a lot of nieces and nephews and I’ve never seen him touch anybody,” a woman named Sara said outside court. “I think that’s all absurd and all lies.”

Nutbrown’s bail was set at $1,000 cash and he was ordered to stay away from the alleged victims. He’s due back in court on April 30.
