P&G announces voluntary recall for 8.2 million defective bags of detergent, cites safety issues
Procter & Gamble has announced a voluntary recall of over eight million liquid laundry detergent packets.
P&G says the recall applies only to bags distributed in the United States. Affected brands include Tide, Gain, Ace and Ariel.
According to P&G, the outer packaging meant to prevent access to the contents can split open near the zipper track, posing a risk of serious injury to children and other vulnerable populations if the contents of the packets were to be ingested.
The ingestion of a large quantity of any surfactant-containing household cleaning product can cause death among people with underlying health issues.
Other risks include skin or eye injuries, P&G says. There have been no confirmed cases of incidents or injuries directly relating to the packaging defect, but P&G says they've received four reports of children in the U.S. accessing the packets. Of those four reports, three reported ingestion.
The company says customers should immediately secure the recalled bags out of sight and reach of children and contact P&G for a full refund and a free replacement child resistant bag to store the product.
To see if your bag is part of the recall, check the lot code and see if it matches with a code on P&G's website.
P&G says the recall involves about 8.2 million units that were sold in the U.S. For more information, including an exact list of what products are included, click here.
