India Box Office: ‘Crew’ Earns $13.5 Million In 10 Days

Following

Balaji Motion Pictures’ Crew has earned more than $13 million in ten days since the release. After an impressive worldwide opening of $2.4 million on March 29, the film scored more than ten million dollars in a week at the global ticket windows. It features Kareena Kapoor Khan, Tabu and Kriti Sanon and continues to entertain the masses.

At the US box office, Crew earned $613,478 in its second weekend, making it to Comscore’s list of top grossing films for the weekend ending April 7. It also collected more than a million dollars in its opening weekend at the US ticket windows and made it to Comscore's SCOR SCOR list of top scoring movies over the weekend ending March 31. The film ranked at the ninth slot, with a weekend collection of $1.4 million in the US markets.

Directed by Rajesh A Krishnan, Crew is the story of three air hostesses (Khan, Sanon and Tabu) who resort to cheating the very system that messes up their lives. It is a thriller narrative told in a comic fashion with sharp and witty dialogues co-written by Nidhi Mehra and Mehul Suri.

Crew aims at being more grounded than it really is. The lead characters comfortably splurge on themselves and party at expensive places even as they complain how they are striving to make ends meet while the airline company enjoys the perks of their hard work. The film is neither as righteous nor as grounded in its tone and tenure as it aspires to be.

Nonetheless, Crew is a fun and light entertainer that also offers a decent peak into the lives of the upper middle class in India. The class that does not shy away from bending rules to make it to the top but also returns to the typical middle-class integrity and honesty soon enough.

Diljit Dosanjh plays the innocent, lovable and honest customs officer and Rajesh Sharma and Saswata Mukherjee also play important roles in the movie. Crew is produced by Anil Kapoor’s production house Anil Kapoor Films & Communication Network and Ekta Kapoor’s Balaji Motion Pictures.

Meanwhile, Randeep Hooda’s directorial debut Swatantrya Veer Savarkar continues to struggle at the ticket windows as it enters the third week. It has managed a collection of $3.5 million in 18 days. As per the ZEE Studios - the film’s producers - Swatantrya Veer Savarkar made an opening collection of nearly $200,000 worldwide. In India, it made $150,000 opening on March 22. Widely panned for being a propaganda film, Swatantrya Veer Savarkar picked up collections with a good word-of-mouth. The film has scored below trade expectations but has been faring well in the Indian state of Maharashtra. The politics of the film apart, it is a must-watch for Hooda’s brilliant performance. The rest of the cast also fit well in their characters and the detailing of the frames are impressive. The film lacks in weaving it all into a seamless piece. Instead, it often feels like a documentary chopping historical events, or answering questions often asked by Savarkar’s critics and throwing those at the audiences.

Releasing Soon

Next, Indian movie buffs are set for yet another round of big-budget, ambitious movies - Ajay Devgn’s Maidaan releases on April 10 and Akshay Kumar-Tiger Shroff-starrer Bade Miyan Chite Miyan hits screens on April 11.

Maidaan

Maidaan has sought an unusual release with the film making it to theatres on a Wednesday evening. Directed by Amit Sharma, it tells the story of Indian football coach Syed Abdul Rahim and features Devgn in the role of the coach. The film has reportedly made nearly $35,000 in advance bookings for the first day of the release. The first day will have limited shows as the film releases only in the evening.

Bade Miyan Chote Miyan

On the other hand, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan is an action-thriller made on a grand scale and is directed by Ali Abbas Zafar. It also features Prithviraj Sukumaran in a negative role alongside Manushi Chhillar, Sonakshi Sinha, and Alaya F. The film was initially slated to release with Maidaan on April 10, but has now been shifted to the next day.
