HOUSTON (CW39) – A new data study reveals the MLS sports teams with the most out-of-state fans. The research conducted by gambling website,  CSGOluck.com analyzes all 50 states based on the number of times residents of each state Google keywords related to an MLS team outside of their home state per month over the last 12 months.

The data includes a total of 323 search terms, including each team name with a variety of phrases such as “Charlotte FC lineups,” “FC Cincinnati game,” “San Jose Earthquakes standings,” “CF Montreal stats,” and “visit LA Galaxy.” 

The number of searches for each term was then added to give a total of monthly searches for each state.

Inter Miami CF is crowned the most popular team for fans outside of Florida, with a total of 350,868 average monthly searches.

The data reveals Californians are the biggest fans of Inter Miami CF, generating an average of 52,932 searches per month. 

Inter Miami CF’s second biggest fans are from Texas, generating an average of 40,078 monthly searches, and New York in third with an average of 30,054 searches per month. 

FC Cincinnati is the second most popular MLS team for out-of-state fans. 

With a total average of 134,082 monthly searches outside of Ohio, FC Cincinnati has the most fans in Kentucky, generating an average of 32,673 searches per month. 

FC Cincinnati’s second biggest fans are based in California, with 9,837 searches, and the third is in Florida, with 8,647 monthly searches.

Los Angeles FC ranks in third position, with a total average of 119,171 monthly searches outside of the state.

Texas has the most Los Angeles FC fans, searching an average of 16,548 times per month. 

New York is the second biggest Los Angeles FC fan, with 7,576 searches per month on average, and third most popular in Washington, searching 6,869 keywords per month.

Philadelphia Union is the fourth most popular out-of-state club, with a total average of 97,388 monthly searches generated in the interest of the club.

New Jersey residents are the biggest fans of the Philadelphia Union, generating an average of 28,885 searches per month. 

Delaware has the second-biggest Philadelphia Union fanbase, with 8,319 searches generated per month. Followed by California, producing 6,842 monthly searches. 

LA Galaxy is the fifth most popular MLS team for out-of-state fans, averaging 84,411 total monthly searches. 

Texas is the biggest fan of this club, producing an average total of 11,872 searches per month. The second biggest fans of La Galaxy are residents of New York, with an average of 5,770 monthly searches, followed by Floridians generating 5,594 monthly searches.

St. Louis City SC, Nashville SC, Columbus Crew SC, Charlotte FC, and New England Revolution round out the top ten most popular clubs.

Houston Dynamo FC is the club with the least interest from out-of-state residents. With 17,040 monthly searches, California and Florida are the most interested states.

A spokesperson for CSGOLuck comments on the study findings,

The fandom for an MLS club is not limited within states but is widespread.

“Fans can develop an affinity for a particular team due to several reasons such as family ties, team success, player allegiance or a team’s culture or style of play.

“Also, with increasing technology and media coverage, it is now easier than ever for fans to watch and support their favorite MLS teams regardless of where they live.”
