Lake Park Community Blood Drive: The Lake Park-Audubon chapter of the National Honor Society will host a community blood drive for Vitalant in the LPA High School Theatre in Lake Park from 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m. A total of 52 donors are needed. Detroit Lakes NARFE: Chapter 1842 of National Active and Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) will hold its first meeting of 2024 in the Ice Cutter Room of the Ice House Restaurant at the Detroit Lakes Holiday Inn, with a noon lunch (order off the menu), followed by a 1 p.m. business meeting. All active and retired federal employees are welcome to attend; you do not need to be a NARFE member. Charitable Pint Night-Marshmallow Animal Shelter: Bucks Mill Brewing in downtown Detroit Lakes will host a Charitable Pint Night benefitting the Marshmallow Animal Shelter from 5 to 8 p.m. A $1.50 portion of the proceeds from each pint sold during the event will directly benefit the non-profit shelter, which is located in Detroit Lakes and was created to serve as a public resource for stray, abandoned and rescued companion animals.

ECFE at the DLCCC: Families who are part of the Early Childhood and Family Education program at Detroit Lakes Public Schools are invited to come check out the health and wellness activities that the Detroit Lakes Community and Cultural Center has to offer from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Pre-registration is required. Holmes Artist Collective: The Holmes Artist Collective is now meeting on the second Thursday of each month (instead of Tuesday mornings), from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in the Holmes Art Cellar. The Artist Collective is a group for makers, crafters, artists and art supporters to come meet, network, ask questions, and help each other grow community in the Detroit Lakes area. There is no fee to attend, but we ask you reach out to visualarts@dlccc.org if you are interested in attending; if you are unable to attend but would like to share some thoughts about the arts in the lake area, you can use the same email address to send them to us.

VFW Cosmic Bingo: Detroit Lakes VFW Post 1676 will host an evening of Cosmic Bingo starting at 7 p.m. Grab your fluorescent daubers and head on over to the VFW for a fun evening as they "put the lights down low and let it glow." Cost is $1 per bingo card; 11 games in all. There will also be electronic racing, meat raffles and door prize giveaways throughout the evening.

Stand-Up Comedy Show: Bucks Mill Brewing in downtown Detriot Lakes will host a stand-up comedy show at 8 p.m., featuring comedians Nathan Fulsebakke and Marlin Wells (opening comic yet to be determined). Doors will open at 7 p.m., with La Barista Catering available to serve up a meal before the show starts. Tickets are $20 each and may be purchased at the taproom (824 Washington Ave.).

Vergas Maple Syrup Festival: The Vergas Community Club will present the community's annual Maple Syrup Festival, with a pancake feed at the Event Center from 7:30-11:30 a.m. (or until gone), and horse-drawn wagon rides at the Methodist Church (behind the event center) from 9 a.m. to noon. In addition, there will be a "Saps Running" 5K run/walk, kids' activities, maple syrup producers contest, live music and more, all happening downtown at the Summers Design Center from 9 a.m. to noon. Downtown stores will also be open and offering some specials in honor of the festival.

Marshmallow Meet and Greet: Come to Bluebird Books in downtown Detroit Lakes from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. for a chance to snuggle with an adoptable pet, and learn more about the Detroit Lakes-based animal shelter, then maybe take the time to do a little book-shopping.

Maple Syrup Day at Maplewood: The Friends of Maplewood State Park will be hosting a Maple Syrup Demonstration Day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the park's Sugar Shack. There will be live demonstrations on how to identify maple trees, how to tap the trees for sap, ways to carry the sap to be processed, and how to cook down the sap to make maple syrup. After attending the demonstrations, be sure to sample some ice cream topped with some locally produced, fresh maple syrup! Other refreshments will also be available for purchase. Jaycees Spring Bingo: The Detroit Lakes Jaycees will present a night of bingo at the Detroit Lakes National Guard Armory, 1220 Rossman Ave., from 5-7 p.m., with doors opening at 4:30 p.m. The Jaycees will only be selling 200 tickets for this 10-game event, at a cost of $40 each. All bingo players will get 20 raffle tickets upon entry; extras will be available for purchase. Advance tickets for this event may be purchased at Lakes Sports Shop, Bucks Mill Brewing, or from Jaycees members. Prizes will include gift cards, raffle tickets (for separate "big ticket" prize drawings) and more, with the grand finale blackout game winner earning $1,000 cash. Attendees are also asked to bring in gently-used clothing for donation to the Disabled American Veterans.

VFW Auxiliary Fundraiser Breakfast: Come support the local VFW Auxiliary and their veterans programs by attending their monthly breakfast fundraiser at VFW Post 1676, 500 Washington Ave., Detroit Lakes. Menu is pancakes, sausage and eggs or biscuits and sausage gravy, with a choice of juice or coffee, all for a donation of $7. Breakfast will be served from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Aquarium Swap and Presentation: Bucks Mill Brewing in downtown Detroit Lakes will co-host an Aquarium Swap with the Lakes Aquarium Club from 1-4 p.m. Chris "The Mad Aquarist" Biggs will do a free presentation to close the show at 3 p.m. Admission is free, but cash donations to help support the event are welcome. You must bring your own display table and chairs to participate, and reserve booth space in advance. Setup starts at 11 a.m., with access available via the back of the mall. Spots do not include electric hookup unless requested in advance. Multiple tables are allowed, but you must reserve sufficient display space in advance. Dyslexia Workshop: The Becker County Museum in Detroit Lakes will host two free workshop sessions on "Dyslexia Awareness, Signs and Adaptations," from 1-3 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. This workshop, sponsored by the Becker County Early Childhood Initiative and West Central Initiative, will be led by Jen Eggen of the non-profit organization "High Hopes," and is geared toward parents, educators, caregivers, employers and anyone else who is interested in learning more about this inherited, neurologically based disorder that interferes with a person's ability to acquire and process language. Color Guard Breakfast: The Lake Region Veterans Color Guard will be hosting a breakfast fundraiser from 8 a.m. to noon at the American Legion Club, 810 West Lake Drive, Detroit Lakes. Just for Kix Spring Show: The talented, hard-working Just for Kix dancers will take the stage at Detroit Lakes High School at 1 p.m. for their spring show. Open to the public.

Say Yes to Bingo Fundraiser: Detroit Lakes VFW Post 1676 will host a special bingo fundraiser for the Lakes Area Yes Network, with doors opening at 1 p.m. and the first game being played at 2 p.m. Event tickets are $24 each, which includes 12 games of bingo; meal and drink tickets sold separately. Multi-day and Recurring Events

Library History Exhibit: The Detroit Lakes Public Library will be hosting "Testify — Slavery to Today: The Diane and Alan Page Collection" from April 15-May 3, during its regular public hours. This impactful traveling exhibit contains images of physical artifacts belonging to former Minnesota Supreme Court Justice and NFL Hall of Famer Alan Page, which were painstakingly photographed and memorialized to illustrate the struggles experienced through slavery, segregation and discrimination. Grief Support Group: Hospice of the River Valley is offering weekly support group sessions in both Detroit Lakes and Perham, every Wednesday from April 3-May 8. These sessions are for anyone coping with a significant loss through death. Each week will begin with a brief educational session, followed by sharing and listening of stories within the group. All grief support classes offered by Hospice of the Red River Valley are free and open to the public. Registration is required for all classes. Holmes Art Cellar Open Studio: Come join members of the Holmes Artist Collective at the Art Cellar every Thursday from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Work on a project, start something new, or just come to spend some time with area artists. Various art events will also be scheduled during this time throughout the year; suggestions for activities or other ideas to include are welcome. Free and open to all; no need to pre-register. This open studio is also held concurrently with monthly meetings of the Holmes Artist Collective, which are held on the second Thursday of every month.

Wood Carving Open Studio: Wood carvers of all skill levels are welcome to join the local carving group at the Holmes Art Cellar in Detroit Lakes every Tuesday from 1-3 p.m. Bring wood carvings to show and/or take part in a free woodworking session. Grace Cafe: Grace Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes will be serving lunch every Wednesday from 12-1 p.m. The lunch is open to all in the Detroit Lakes area; admission is a free-will donation. Guests are welcome to stay after the meal to play games or cards.

Grace Food Pantry: Grace Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes will be operating a food pantry during its regular office hours, 9 a.m.- noon Monday through Friday. Anyone in need can come in and pick up some food. Donations will also be accepted.

Celebrate Recovery: The Celebrate Recovery group meets every Tuesday, 6:30-8 p.m. at Christian Fellowship Church, 28048 Meadow Drive, Detroit Lakes, to take the next steps on the "Road to Recovery: Eight Principles Based on the Beatitudes, Twelve Steps and their Biblical Comparison." Many struggle with alcoholism, divorce, sexual abuse, codependency, domestic violence, drug addiction, food and gambling addictions. Celebrate Recovery is a tried and proven format to help you walk through life's struggles. Library Storytime: The Detroit Lakes Public Library offers weekly Preschool Storytime sessions every Thursday, and Family Storytime every Saturday, both at 10:30 a.m. Preschoolers and their caregivers/families are invited to join library staff for stories, flannel boards, finger plays, songs and more. Holy Rosary Al-Anon Meeting: There will be an Al-Anon meeting every Thursday, starting at noon, inside Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 1043 Lake Ave., Detroit Lakes.

Overeaters Anonymous: A 12-step program for those who struggle in their relationship with food, Overeaters Anonymous continues to meet at noon every Tuesday at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes. There is no charge to attend. Contact Debbie C. at 218-234-3071. Another group also meets on Sunday nights at 6 p.m. via Zoom. This is a change of venue as of Oct. 9.
