BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — The Birmingham Police Department is investigating after a juvenile was shot and killed during a trip to his neighborhood’s convenience store Tuesday night.

According to BPD Sgt. LaQuitta Wade, officers were called to a person shot report in the 4200 block of Jackson Street just before 8:30 p.m.

A juvenile male was found shot inside a vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. He was later identified as 16-year-old Jaylan Lee Jenkins, of Birmingham, according to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office.

Wade stated the preliminary investigation revealed Jenkins asked his parents to drive to a local convenience store. Investigators then learned Jenkins got into an argument with someone at the store. After he got into his vehicle, he was shot through his car door while driving roughly four blocks away from the store.

No arrests have been made and no one is in custody in connection to the case at this time, according to Wade.

Those with information on the case are urged to call BPD at 205-254-1764 or submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
