It’s April, and Donald Trump has already secured the Republican nomination for president this year.

But 12 years ago, GOP candidate Mitt Romney was close to securing to securing his nomination.

NBC 10's Bill Rappleye reported on Romney's campaign stop in Rhode Island on April 11, 2012.

That visit came just one day after one of Romney's challengers, former Sen. Rick Santorum, dropped out of the race.

Romney eventually secured his nomination the following month, losing to incumbent Barack Obama in November.
