UPDATE

SIOUX CITY (KTIV) - Sioux City Police have identified the motorcyclist killed after a crash on U.S. Highway 20 in Sioux City.

Police identified him as 44-year-old Nicholas D. Barnes of Sioux City.

First responders were sent to an accident Wednesday on Highway 20 near Mile Marker 2 by the S. Lakeport Commons exit. Sioux City Police say Barnes was merging onto Highway 20 westbound from the on-ramp off South Lakeport, dropped off the edge of the pavement at the end of the on-ramp and lost control.

Barnes and the motorcycle went down, slid across the traffic lanes and into the median that separates the east and west lanes of traffic and Barnes was separated from the bike. The motorcycle was struck by an oncoming vehicle, Barnes was not.

The collision with the oncoming vehicle sent the motorcycle into the ditch and it caught fire. Police say Barnes was not struck by any vehicle, sustained critical injuries in the crash and was taken to a local hospital where they died.
