The moment a police officer punched a man in the face has been captured on video.

Footage shows the man standing near a squad car's open passenger-side door before the cop approaches and knocks him to the ground.

The dramatic incident unfolded at Knox Park in Murwillumbah, northern NSW, on Monday when police responded to reports of an assault.

During their inquiries, police will allege a 50-year-old man approached officers and attempted to intervene in the conflict.

'The man was issued a move-on direction before being removed from the location to prevent him hindering police further,' NSW Police said in a statement

'A short time later, the same man approached a marked police sedan and allegedly placed his belongings on the bonnet and attempted to get in the vehicle.'

Police allege the man then 'took hold of a police officer by the arm and a struggle ensued'.

He was taken to Tweed Heads Police Station and was charged with unlawfully entering a vehicle, assaulting a police officer, and resisting arrest.

He was granted bail and will front Murwillumbah local court on May, 22.
