The Arizona Coyotes social media account created a firestorm of speculation on Friday when it posted a nine-word message on X, formerly Twitter.

"The Phoenix Coyotes has a nice ring to it :)"

The post, in the wake of the team laying out plans for a new arena in north Phoenix, instantly set off a firestorm of speculation on social media.

Could the team, which changed its name from the Phoenix Coyotes to the Arizona Coyotes in 2014, go back to its original moniker in the state?

The team had been known as the Phoenix Coyotes since it starting playing in Arizona in 1996 after previously being the Winnipeg Jets.
