THE family of a football fan scattered his ashes at a Canvey football club.

Sarah Giles, 53, of Lansburg Road, Canvey, scattered the ashes of her late husband Bob, with her family, at Canvey Island FC, Park Lane, on Saturday.

Lifelong islander Bob, who worked as a builder and was a loyal supporter of the club, died last month, aged 65.

The family also donated £794 to Canvey charity the Danny Green Fund, after a collection was held at Bob’s funeral.

Sarah said: “Bob was well known on the island and when he passed away, back in December last year, word spread across the island like wildfire, everybody was so shocked.

“I didn’t expect that many people at the funeral on December 30, but there were about 200 there.

“At the time, we decided to ask for donations to help a local charity.

We chose the Danny Green Fund because Danny was a Canvey boy.

“Bob loved football, and he always used to go and watch Canvey Football Club play.

“He loved being there and had strong links with the club, so it felt right to take him to where he loved spending so much time.”

The Danny Green Fund was launched in July 2012 by the family of 11-year-old Danny Green, who died after losing his battle with brain and spinal cancer.

It aims to raise funds to help children with Posterior Fossa Syndrome, a condition which can occur after having a brain tumour removed.

Sarah added: “The money we raised will go to a better use at the charity than if it was spent on flowers.

“The ceremony at the football club was really nice. It was tough for me, because it was like having the wake all over again.

“Lisa and Chris Green from the Danny Green Fund were so grateful for our donations.

“We now have a plaque at the football ground, which everybody can go and visit. We also let off 50 balloons in memory of Bob.”

Danny’s mum Lisa Green, 48, added: “It’s an amazing amount of money and it will make such a difference to the children we help. The ceremony was really touching, and although we didn’t know Bob personally, it was great to learn about him and there was a great atmosphere during the evening.”
