The Spanish village constantly being named among the country’s most beautiful makes for the perfect European getaway. Albarracin in the Aragon region is perched at almost 4,000ft and is a UNESCO-inscribed village with its own castle on the banks of the Guadalaviar River.

The village itself features a citadel, main square and cathedral located in stunning cobbled streets lined with stone shops, homes and cafes.

Albarracin is surrounded by mountains making it perfect for those who love hiking and climbing, with the location being declared a national monument in 1961 by the Spanish government.

But despite its beauty, the village is home to just 1,075 people making it perfect for those looking for an escape from the big city.

The village is also packed with history, the Andador Tower dates from the 10th century, while in the 11th century, the Taifa kings of Albarracin built the walls surrounding its Engarrada suburb.

The present-day Cathedral of El Salvador, attached to the former Episcopal Palace, was built in the 16th century and houses the Diocesan Museum which exhibits a valuable collection of Flemish tapestries.

Albarracin is also home to a cultural park displaying samples of post-Palaeolithic art from between 6000 and 1000 BC.

“The town is very interesting and full of history, but it is better to go in the summer months.”

Those wishing to visit Albarracin should fly to Castellon de la Plana from Stansted with Ryanair for just £38 for a return flight in April, with car hire the best option to reach Albarracin from there in about two hours.
