Upcoming programs at the Leominster Public Library, week of April 22

For all programs that require registration, the library staff will hold your spot for 10 minutes past the scheduled start time of the program; after that, your spot may be given to someone who is waiting. Plan your arrival accordingly.

Family Fun Night: STEAMing Through the Year – Taking Care of our Planet:
Children ages 3-7 are invited on Monday, April 22, at 6 p.m. for Family Fun Night. Read some earth-friendly stories. Then turn trash into treasure by creating sculptures using recyclable material, identify recyclable objects, and play a recycle sorting game. Then decorate a pot and plant a seed. Registration is required and begins April 16. This program is sponsored by the Leominster Public Library, in conjunction with Project Apples, Leominster’s CFCE.

Little Spark Theater presents Little Kid Creative Drama:
Children ages 3-6 and their caregivers are invited on Tuesday, April 23, at 10 a.m. for Little Kid Creative Drama with Ali Coes of Little Spark Theater. This class is a high-energy, imaginative, zany silly, super fun theater experience. Focus on senses, feelings, and movement through fun, energetic, and imaginative play. Children build confidence, social awareness, empathy, and problem-solving skills. The class will have a seasonal theme and literacy component as well. Registration is required and begins April 16. This program is sponsored in Memory of Marylou Montuori by Donations Made by Family and Friends.

High Flying Book Readers:
Kids who are 10, 11, or 12 years old who love to read are welcome to join the High Flying Book Readers, a book club just for them, on Tuesday, April 23, at 7 p.m. Each month, read a book and discuss it at the meeting. It might be a mystery, adventure, graphic novel, fantasy or realistic fiction. Talk about the book and other titles everyone has been reading and get a sneak peek at new titles in the library’s collection. The April title is The Misfits: A Royal Conundrum, by Lisa Yee. Books are available in the Dr. Martin T. Feldman Children’s Room. Be sure to give yourself enough time to read the book to discuss it at the meeting. Registration is not required, but call (978) 534-7522, ext. 5, with any questions.

Science Explorers: Owls and Their Prey with Hands on Nature:
Children ages 5-8 are invited to join Heather Simpson, of Hands on Nature, on Wednesday, April 24, at 4 p.m. for Owls and Their Prey. Science Explorers will participate in owl pellet dissection.  Come discover the habits of owls, their adaptations, and their roles in nature. Practice owl calls and learn about their prey. Discover facts about local owls, and gain knowledge of simple food chains. Registration is required and begins April 17. This program is sponsored by the Leominster Public Library in conjunction with Project Apples, Leominster’s CFCE. CFCE is funded by a grant from the MA Dept. of Early Education and Care and supported by the Leominster Public Schools. This program is supported by a partial grant from the Leominster Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.

Wild Tales with Mass Audubon Drumlin Farms:
Children ages 4-8 are invited on Thursday, April 25, at 10 or 10:45 a.m. as Drumlin Farm visits for a special story-time. Children will listen to an animal story and afterwards, meet a live rabbit up close. Children will learn about where it lives and what it eats, as well as have the opportunity to ask questions. Registration is required and begins on April 18. This program is sponsored by a generous donation from Dr. Michael J. Lyons, M.D., F.A.A.P. of Medical Associates Pediatrics.

OCEANS & SHARKS ROCK by Dinosaurs Rock:
Kids ages 4-13 are invited to Dive into Dinosaur Rock’s OCEANS & SHARKS ROCK program, on Saturday, April 27, at 3 p.m., where adventure meets education and the wonders of the deep blue sea await. See a fascinating, interactive show plus engage in hands-on activities. Ever dreamed of touching a shark without becoming its snack? Their expert guide will lead you through a hands-on experience where you feel the skin of a life-size taxidermy shark. How about “petting” a taxidermy stingray without feeling the sting? Come face to face with giant shark jaws and a giant prehistoric Megalodon shark tooth. Learn about fascinating sea creatures through footage that literally transports you from the library to the aquarium. After the show, join a seashell and fossil dig where you get to keep one of each. Plus you’ll make your own fossil shark tooth necklace to wear home. Registration is required and begins April 20. Participants must be willing to fill out a short survey at the end of the program for the United Way. This program is sponsored by the MA Department of Elementary and Secondary Education’s DESE ASOST Grant, administered by the United Way of North Central Massachusetts.
