The Open Book: A Novel Spot For Community Connection

The Open Book in Canyon Country is much more than a community bookshop, it’s a welcoming third place for Santa Clarita readers of all ages and interests to connect, explore and be inspired.

An independently owned bookshop, Canyon Country’s The Open Book is one of four locations focused on bringing an authentic bookstore experience tailored to the communities they serve.

“We want people to just feel happy and comfortable here when they come in, like everybody’s welcome,” said Store Manager Diane Tuazon. “We’ve got college students, kids, families – all the creative types. We try to make it for everybody.”

Books are often sourced secondhand from estate sales and storage units, other bookstores and even offers a buyback program for quality copies in return for store credit.

At the Canyon Country location, The Open Book offers more than just literature. It also offers regular meeting space for a writer’s group, a knitting group, children’s story time and crafts, meet-the-author events, and a monthly market for local artists.

“We’ve been around for as long as we have because we have a great customer base.  We’ve got some awesome people who shop here – we’ve got regulars, get new people every day and we just love it.” Tuazon said. “People come here because they’re passionate about books, and it makes it such a fun environment.”

Through the efforts of the Santa Clarita community, The Open book has developed into a third place for many residents, a term coined by sociologist Ray Oldenburg,  a hub of interaction away from the home (first place) and the workplace (second place).

The Blank Page Writing Club started at The Open Book SCV in 2014 and has grown into an eclectic group of writers of all genres and experiences, meeting every Sunday to discuss their works and motivate each other.

Local hobby club Knitters 4 Life also meets weekly at the bookshop, sharing tips, exchanging patterns, and even offering technique lessons in the fibreart.

Even younger readers have a chance to join in on the fun with a themed storytime and crafts at 3:30 p.m. every Sunday,

The Open Book also hosts a monthly Art Mart, allowing local artists to set up shop for the day to sell their creations. The next Art Mart at The Open Book SCV is scheduled for Saturday, April 27, from 2 to 6 p.m.

The Open Book Canyon Country location can be found at 19188 Soledad Canyon Road near the intersection of Soledad and Whites Canyon Roads.
