L.L. Bean is laying off customer service workers and shortening the hours to their call center.

The Freeport-based retail giant says their decision is based on the trends of their customers, with more people shopping online and fewer customers calling customer service in the early morning and late-night hours.

In a statement, the company said in part:

"Impacting people’s jobs and schedules is never a decision L.L. Bean makes lightly, and we will be offering impacted employees severance, outplacement services and for those who are eligible, company retiree benefits."

It's unknown how many positions are being laid off.

Starting in July, their call center hours will shift to 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Their website says their current call center hours are 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.
