For the fifth time in program history, the Utah State men’s basketball team appeared in the final Associated Press Top 25 Poll for the season.
The Aggies checked in at No. 22 on Tuesday, the day after the national championship game which brought the 2023-24 season to a close. In the Coaches Poll, USU was No. 20 on Tuesday. It was the 10th time the Aggies finished a season ranked by the coaches.
Going into the NCAA Tournament, the Aggies were No. 20 in the AP Poll. For the first time since 2001, USU won a game in the Big Dance, beating TCU, 88-72.
In the second round of the NCAA Tournament, the Aggies ran into Midwest Region top-seeded Purdue, who was No. 3 in the final regular season poll. The Boilermakers rolled over USU, 106-67, and made it all the way to the national championship game.
Fellow Mountain West Conference opponent San Diego State finished the season at No. 17.
For the first time since joining the Mountain West in 2013, the Aggies won a conference title outright in men’s basketball. They went 14-4 in league action, edging Nevada and Boise State by a game. USU did tie for the MW regular season title back in 2019, but shared it with Nevada and was the second seed for the conference tournament.
First-year head coach Danny Sprinkle guided USU to a 28-7 overall record in 2023-24. He tied Craig Smith for the most wins by a first-year Aggie head basketball coach. Sprinkle left for Washington less than 24 hours after the loss to Purdue.
Jerrod Calhoun was named the 22nd head coach in program history on March 30. He is currently putting together a coaching staff and working on also recruiting current players to stay and looking to fill some holes.
USU finished the season ranked sixth in the nation in 3-point field goal percentage defense (.293), ninth in field goal percentage (.491), 24th in assists per game (16.3), 34th in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.49), 41st in scoring margin (+8.3) and 41st in points per game (79.7).
